Three-fold rise in urban renewal funds likely: Kamal Nath

New Delhi, Feb 6 (IANS) The second phase of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) could witness a three-fold increase in its budget, Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath said Monday.

“We are looking at 0.25 percent of the GDP. It will be almost two and a half times or rather three times the size of the first JNNURM,” the minister told reporters here.
Kamal Nath said that the next phase in the mission could include other cities also.

“We are discussing the issue of which cities to add and also some reforms in the system,” Nath said.
“In the second phase definitely Gwalior and Indore would be added to the list of the cities under JNNURM,” he said.
“Every state has given good ideas and one of the ideas is that the big metropolitan municipal corporations and the smaller municipal councils should not be dealt on a common platform and separate plans should be created for smaller cities,” Kamal Nath added.
The JNNURM, intended to cover seven years, was launched by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in December 2005.
