Washington, May 20 (IANS) The leaders of the Group of Eight (G8) major industrialised nations have expressed “deep” and “grave” concern over the actions of North Korea and Iran, and urged both countries to come out clean on all outstanding issues related to their controversial nuclear programmes.
“We continue to have deep concerns about provocative actions of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) that threaten regional stability,” Xinhua quoted the group as saying in a joint statement after the G8 summit concluded at Camp David in America’s Maryland state Saturday.
The group urged Pyongyang to comply with its international obligations and abandon all nuclear and ballistic missile programmes in a “complete, verifiable, and irreversible manner”.
Calling on all UN member states to join the G8 in fully implementing the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, the group affirmed its will to call for UN action, in response to additional actions by North Korea, including ballistic missile launches and nuclear tests.
North Korea announced in March its plan to launch an “earth observation” satellite, using a long-range rocket, to mark the 100th birthday of late leader Kim Il-Sung. But the launch failed.
The US later announced it would not go forward with the food aid deal with North Korea, accusing Pyongyang of using the satellite launch as a cover for its long-range ballistic missile test.
The G8 also said it remains united in its “grave concern” over Iran’s disputed nuclear programme, and urged Tehran to address such concern without delay.
“We remain united in our grave concern over Iran’s nuclear programme. We call on Iran to comply with all of its obligations under relevant UNSC resolutions and requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Board of Governors,” the G8 leaders said in a declaration.
The leaders urged Iran “to continuously comply with its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, including its safeguards obligations”.
They demanded Iran “address without delay” all outstanding issues related to its nuclear programme, such as questions concerning possible military dimensions.
The group, however, expressed the desire for “a peaceful and negotiated solution to concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme”.

Washington, May 20 (IANS) Mark Zuckerberg has added a new post to his timeline. He and longtime girlfriend Priscilla Chan have tied the knot.
The Facebook co-founder and chief executive officer announced on the social network: “Mark Zuckerberg added a life event to May 19, 2012 on his timeline: Married Priscilla Chan.”
Zuckerberg, 28, posted a photo which showed the young CEO wore a suit jacket at the wedding rather than his trademark hoodie, Xinhua reported.
The couple tied the knot at Zuckerberg’s home in Palo Alto, California.
“Zuckerberg’s wedding was in his backyard, before fewer than 100 guests, who thought they were there to celebrate Chan’s graduation,” according to a tweet from a Huffington Post editor.
The 27-year-old Chan and Zuckerberg met at Harvard and have been dating for more than nine years. Chan is an American-Chinese.
The wedding wrapped up a busy week for the couple. Zuckerberg turned 28 Monday, the same day Chan graduated from the medical school at the University of California, San Francisco.
On Friday, he rang the bell from the Facebook headquarters in California, staging one of the most anticipated initial public offering in Wall Street history.

Washington, May 20 (IANS) Oxytocin, often referred to as a love hormone, boosts activity in brain areas of autistic children involving sight, hearing and understanding other people.
These are the preliminary results from an ongoing, large-scale study led by postoctoral fellow IIanit Gordon and Kevin Pelphrey, associate professor of child psychiatry and psychology at the Yale School of Medicine.
Gordon and her team conducted a first-of-its-kind, rigorous study on kids aged between seven and 18 years with autism. They gave them a single dose of oxytocin in a nasal spray and used functional magnetic resonance brain imaging to observe its effect.
Previous studies have shown that the inability to secrete oxytocin and feel empathy is linked to sociopathy, psychopathy, narcissism and general manipulativenes, according to an Yale statement.
“Our findings provide the first, critical steps toward devising more effective treatments for the core social deficits in autism, which may involve a combination of clinical interventions with an administration of oxytocin,” said Gordon.
Autism, a neuro-developmental disorder, can have enormous emotional and financial burden on the affected individual, their families, and society. It is characterised by a stunted ability to communicate verbally and non-verbally or interact socially.
These findings were presented Saturday at the International Meeting for Autism Research.

Washington, May 20 (IANS) Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev met US President Barack Obama for an informal chat on the sidelines of the Group of Eight summit in Camp David.
Both leaders sat and talked on a bench in a park with translators on each side Saturday, RIA Novosti reported.
“I said that my presence here in Camp David in the capacity of the head of the Russian delegation, when the (Russian) president is busy forming a new government, could be considered as a definite symbol of succession in our foreign policies and succession in reset,” Medvedev told a news conference after the meeting.
The former Russian president said most of the talk was devoted to issues of reset in relations between Russia and the US.
“I am satisfied with the talks. It means that our (Russian and American) conversation continues,” Medvedev said.
The prime minister also said he gave Obama a letter from President Vladimir Putin that stipulates Russia’s priorities in the foreign policy course.
The prime minister attended the summit instead of Putin, who withdrew last week citing the need to finalise a new government after his inauguration.

Washington, May 19 (IANS/RIA Novosti) The leaders of the G8 industrialised nations meeting at Camp David Saturday agreed that Greece should remain member of the European Union and welcomed EU efforts to solve debt crisis problems.
The two-day summit groups together leaders of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and the US.
In a report concerning global economy, G8 said that a strong and united eurozone was important for global stability and economic recovery, and the group reaffirms its commitment to Greece remained in the euro area.
Greece is trying to avoid default and withdrawal from the eurozone by implementing an austerity programme in exchange for multi-billion-dollar loans from the EU and International Monetary Fund.
Athens is planning further austerity measures to save some $33 billion through 2015. The country’s total debt has ballooned to $490 billion.
“Greece’s withdrawal [from the EU] is a bad scenario. We need Greece to stay in eurozone but it should implement responsible policy,” Arkady Dvorkovich, Russian Sherpa at the summit meeting, told reporters.
