Thiruvananthapuram, May 8 (IANS) Policemen in Kerala can no longer use their designation when express their opinions on social networking sites, Home Minister T. Radhakrishnan said Tuesday.
The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Radhakrishnan with senior police officials.
Speaking to reporters here after the meeting, the minister said that from now on, no police officer should use his designation on a social networking site.
“This cannot be done because police officers have to follow discipline, and logging on to social networking sites and expressing their opinion on issues is against police rules,” Radhakrishnan said.
“They can, however, log on to such sites but cannot use their official designation,” he added.
The decision comes against the backdrop of the suspension of a police officer for expressing his views using his official designation on a social networking site.

Thiruvananthapuram, May 8 (IANS) The Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB) will organise an awareness campaign on marine life in the nine coastal districts of the state May 22, on the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB).
The National Biodiversity Authority will also play a key role in the awareness campaign named as “greening the blue”.
“Declining marine diversity, threats to the ecosystem, sustainable livelihood, and conservative approach and local level planning for the conservation of depleting resources will be the points that would be discussed on that day,” said K.P. Laladhas, member secretary of KSBB.
The KSBB feels that there is an urgent need for the awareness campaign, as the coast in the state is approximately 10 per cent of the country’s total coastline.
The official data show that 30 per cent of the state’s population live in coastal areas, while the fishermen population in the state is about 1.1 million.
Studies have shown that the climate change coupled with construction of sea walls and infrastructure activities are threatening the habitat of sea-turtles in the state due to habitat destructions, poaching, marine debris and fishing activities.

Thiruvananthapuram, May 8 (IANS) The Kerala government may enact a new law to uphold the dignity of women, state Home Minister T. Radhakrishnan said Tuesday during his first official meeting here with top police officials.
“Of late, the state has seen numerous cases where the dignity of women was being affected, specially in public places. Kerala is known for several path-breaking legislations and we will not hesitate to form a new law that will uphold the dignity and decency of women,” he said.
He also said the government wanted the community policing and police student cadet initiative strengthened and extended.
The minister also expressed his concern over people hiring gangs to kill their rivals.
“This is unacceptable to the people of the state. We have a law to curb this menace. If you think that it has to be revisited to strengthen it, we can do that,” he said.
He said a new policy was being formulated to honour police officials who did commendable service.

Thiruvananthapuram, May 7 (IANS) Kerala’s Leader of Opposition and Communist Party of India Marxist (CPI-M) veteran V.S. Achuthanandan Monday denied his party’s involvement in the murder of a former party leader and said that it was for the police to find out the truth.
“All what I said about the party not being behind this was based on the explanation made out by the Kozhikode party district secretary and now it is the responsibility of the investigating police to come out with what happened,” Achuthanandan told reporters here.
Incidentally barring Achuthanandan, none of the top brass of the CPI-M turned up to pay homage to their former party comrade.
T.P. Chandrasekharan, 51, was killed in Onchiyam near here Friday night while returning home.
Police said he was attacked with a bomb and then killed. His face was badly disfigured.
Chandrasekharan was a very active and popular CPI-M leader in his hometown in Onchiyam near Kozhikode till 2008 after which he formed the Revolutionary Marxist Party, which unseated his old party in village councils around his home town.
Soon after the murder, the Congress alleged that the murder could not have taken place without the CPI-M’s knowledge, leading to a war of words between the leaders of the two parties.
CPI-M state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan Monday said that with the Neyattinkara by-election round the corner, police might not arrest the culprits for ulterior motives.
Police are tight-lipped about the progress of the investigation, but sources said that half a dozen people are in custody in connection with the crime.
A police team Monday arrived at the Kannur Central Prison and inspected the list of visitors in the past one month while the cyber cell is also investigating the telephone calls that were made from the prison in the recent past.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that there is no doubt that the murderers will be brought to book.
“Am surprised to hear why Vijayan said that police will not arrest thekillers,” he said.
However, Congress MP from Kannur, K.Sudhakaran, told reporters in New Delhi that there was no doubt that it was the CPI-M which was behind the murder, and demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe to unearth the truth.
