Tehran, April 28 (IANS) Iran’s permanent representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said Tehran and the UN nuclear watchdog have agreed to hold a new round of talks on the nuclear issue May 13-14, the IRNA news agency reported.
Ali-Asghar Soltanieh said the talks with the IAEA will encompass setting a framework and modality for responding to some questions relevant to Iran’s nuclear activities.
He said the talks will be held in Iran’s permanent representative office in Vienna.
The remarks came after the latest round of nuclear talks between Iran and six world powers – Britain, China, France, Russia, the US plus Germany (P5+1) – concluded in Istanbul earlier this month. All sides described the talks as positive and agreed to meet again in Baghdad May 23, said Xinhua.
In March, IAEA head Yukiya Amano said Iran has stepped up its nuclear enrichment activities, as its monthly production of 20-percent purity uranium tripled since November 2011.
Speaking at the quarterly meeting of the IAEA board, Amano said the IAEA had “serious concerns” that Iran’s enrichment activities might relate to the development of nuclear weapons.
Amano also expressed concern over Iran’s repeated refusal to allow inspectors into the Parchin military site, in which simulated nuclear warhead tests allegedly took place, the report said.
Soltanieh said access to Parchin would only be granted if both sides agree on certain conditions. He, however, did not elaborate.

Tehran, April 22 (IANS) Women with some heart disease are more likely to give birth to girls, says a study conducted by a university in Iran. It found that 75 percent of the 216 children born to 200 pregnant women with diagnosed heart diseases were girls.
“We believe that this is the first study looking at the relationship between gender and the mother’s cardiac disease,” A. Alizadehasl of Tabriz University said in a statement. “We hope that this will lead to further investigation into this area.”
Sixty-four percent of the pregnant women in the study group were diagnosed with valvular disease (involving one or more of the heart valves), 19 percent had dilated cardiomyopathy (heart unable to pump blood efficiently) while 14 percent had uncorrected or significant residual congenital heart disease (defect in the heart’s structure and great vessels present at birth).
“This is a very interesting observation,” said Kathryn Taubert, chief science officer, World Heart Federation. “The chromosomes in a man’s sperm are responsible for the sex of a baby but this study suggests that there may be a relationship between the health status of the mother and the sex of the babies she is able to carry to full-term. As the number of women with heart disease is increasing around the world, this could prove to be an interesting area for further research.”
The findings were presented at the World Heart Federation’s World Congress of Cardiology in Dubai recently.

Tehran, April 12 (IANS) Iran has said it will attend the planned nuclear talks in Istanbul later this week but will not compromise on its right to atomic energy.
Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili said Tehran will offer “new initiatives” at the talks Saturday with UN Security Council’s five permanent members plus Germany.
“We hope the G5+1 countries will also enter talks with constructive approaches,” Xinhua quoted him as saying Wednesday.
Jalili lauded Iran’s accomplishments, particularly the production of fuel rods for its nuclear reactor and said the country will defend its rights, implying it will not yield to Western pressure over its controversial nuclear programme at the talks.
On Sunday, the New York Times reported that the US and its Western allies will set demands for the upcoming talks. They include immediate closure of the underground Fordo nuclear facility in central Iran and a freeze on 20-percent uranium enrichment.
Western nations believe Iran is trying to acquire nuclear weapons through its nuclear porgramme, but Tehran says it is meant for producing electricity.
