Iran to launch new generation of satellites

Tehran, Feb 6 (IANS) Iran is planning to send a new generation of satellites into orbit to mark the 33rd anniversary of the Islamic republic’s establishment, Defence Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi has said.

On Friday, Iran announced that it successfully launched an observation satellite into orbit, reported Xinhua.
The spacecraft, named Navid (Herald) and weighing 50 kg, can take pictures at altitudes of about 250 km to 375 km from the earth.
The launch of Navid satellite using Safir satellite carrier was not simply an aerospace operation, but stood for creativity, self-reliance and wisdom of Iran’s aerospace engineers, Press TV quoted Vahidi as saying Sunday.
Tehran plans to launch the country’s first manned mission into space by 2019, the media report said.

Iran prepares to strike back if attacked

Tehran, Feb 5 (IANS) Iran would strike back at any location from where attacks against it were mounted and was preparing itself against western plans aimed at mounting pressure on it, Fars news agency reported Sunday.

“Any location which is used by the enemy for raids against the Islamic republic will be targeted by the IRGC forces,” Xinhua quoted Fars news agency citing Hossein Salami, the deputy head of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).
Salami made the remarks during IRGC’s military drills near Iran’s southern waters.
On Saturday, the IRGC announced that the country started “Hamiane Velayat” (supporters of Velayat) military drills in southern Iran. There were, however, no reports on the exact location and duration of the drill.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi has also said that Tehran is preparing itself to counter all western plans aimed at mounting pressure on the country, the Press TV reported Sunday.
“Tehran is examining even the worst-case scenarios and preparing itself to counteract them,” Salehi was quoted as saying.
Iran has, however, said that its exercises in the southern waters or near the area are aimed at maintaining readiness to confront threats in the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz, an important route for oil exports.
Tehran has threatened to close the strait if it couldn’t sell its oil in the face of Western sanctions on the oil exports.

3,000 candidates approved for Iran polls

Tehran, Feb 5 (IANS) Iran’s high legislative body, the Guardian Council, has approved more than 3,000 candidates for the parliament elections, Press TV reported.

Abbas-Ali Kadkhodaei, spokesman of the Guardian Council, said more people would be reviewed by Feb 10, according to Xinhua.
Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar announced in December last year that 5,395 people, including 428 women, had registered their candidacy.
The parliamentary polls are slated for March 2, where the candidates will contest for the 290-seat Majlis.

Protests had taken place in Tehran and other cities after the elections, which were suspected to be rigged in favour of incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Iran to stop Europe oil exports

Tehran, Feb 4 (IANS) Iran will stop its oil exports to Europe, Oil Minister Rostam Qasemi said Saturday.

The development comes after the European Union endorsed the measures adopted by the foreign ministers of the 27-member block Jan 23 against Iran’s oil exports.
Qasemi Saturday called on the EU to review its decision and said Iran’s oil exports to Europe comprise only 18 percent of the country’s total oil exports.
He was speaking at a press conference Saturday, China Daily reported.
The embargo will not create any problem to Iran, he said.
