Injured Deco out of Libertadores quarter-final

Rio de Janeiro, May 15 (IANS) Former Portugal midfielder Deco will miss both legs of Fluminense’s Copa Libertadores quarter-final against Boca Juniors with a thigh injury.

The 34-year-old tore his right quadriceps muscle during Fluminense’s 1-0 victory over Botafogo in the final of the Campeonato Carioca in Rio Sunday.
Fluminense coach Abel Braga confirmed the former Porto, Chelsea and Barcelona star would be unavailable for at least two weeks.
It means he will miss Thursday’s duel against Boca at the Bombonera in Buenos Aires and the return match in Rio May 23.
“If we get through to the semi-finals we will have a week’s rest and perhaps he will be able to rejoin us then,” Braga was quoted as saying by Xinhua.
Deco’s injury comes just days after his teammate Fred was also ruled out of Thursday’s match in Argentina with a thigh injury.
“We are sorry not to have them playing because of the quality they bring to the team,” Braga said. “But we have confidence in our group and now it gives a chance to other players to show what they are capable of.”

Brazil releases Neymar, Ganso for Libertadores quarter-final

Rio de Janeiro, May 15 (IANS) Neymar and Paulo Henrique Ganso are free to play in Santos’ Copa Libertadores clash against Velez Sarsfield May 24 after being released from international duty by Brazil’s football federation.

Goalkeeper Rafael has also been given leave for the quarter-final second leg of South America’s elite club tournament at Brazil’s Vila Belmiro stadium, reported Xinhua.
It means the trio will miss Brazil’s May 26 international against Denmark in Hamburg, Germany.
They will rejoin the squad for friendlies in the United States against the US May 30, Mexico (June 3) and Argentina (June 9).
Brazil coach Mano Menezes has stated he will use the matches to form the basis of his squad for the London Olympics.

Brazilian supermodel to wed one of Bob Marley’s sons

Rio de Janeiro, May 14 (IANS/EFE) Brazilian supermodel Isabeli Fontana told Veja magazine that she planned to marry Rohan Marley, son of legendary reggae singer Bob Marley, in Ethiopia, the birthplace of the Rastafarian movement.

“Rohan told me we have to return to the roots so the marriage will last forever,” the 28-year-old model, who will be marrying for the third time, said.
Fontana said the couple had not set a wedding date, but the Brazilian press speculated that the two could tie the knot this year at a ceremony for family and a few close friends.
The model has two children from her first two marriages, while Marley has two children from his first marriage to Geraldine Khawly and five others with singer Lauryn Hill.
Marley separated from Hill last year after it came out that she was expecting a child from an affair with another man.
He met Fontana a short time later.
Marley and Fontana “see each other very little” because she continues living in Sao Paulo and he lives in New York, Veja said.
The model’s mother, Maribel Fontana, told the magazine she was a bit concerned about the wedding plans.
“I think everything is happening too fast,” Maribel Fontana said of her daughter’s plans, “but everything has a different rhythm with Isabeli”.

Bolivar players pleaded for mercy, says Santos striker

Rio de Janeiro, May 12 (IANS) Bolivar players pleaded with their Santos opponents to show mercy during the Brazilian club’s 8-0 Copa Libertadores victory.

According to Santos striker Alan Kardec, the request came when the players returned to the pitch after leading 5-0 at half-time at the Vila Belmiro stadium Thursday.
“They told us, ‘Please, you are already hammering us’,” Kardec was quoted as saying by Xinhua.
“They asked us to take it easy and take the foot off the pedal because we were already winning easily.”
Kardec revealed the team was particularly motivated for the match after being pelted with fruits and stones during their quarter-final first leg in La Paz last month.
Thursday’s result equals the club’s record eight-goal winning margin set during the 1962 tournament when it defeated Paraguay’s Cerro Porteno 9-1

Ronaldinho out of Brazil squad

Rio De Janeiro, May 12 (IANS) Two-time FIFA world footballer of the year Ronaldinho has been left out of Brazil’s national team for a series of upcoming friendlies against Denmark, the US, Mexico and Argentina.

Criticized for his poor form and the early exit of his Brazilian club Flamengo from Copa Libertadores, Ronaldinho’s exclusion comes two days after the president of Brazil’s football federation, Jose Maria Marin, expressed his displeasure over sending the midfielder to London.
The 23-man squad named for the friendlies will form the basis for Brazil’s London Olympic team, set to be announced next month.

National coach Mano Menezes, who last year cited Ronaldinho as a key part of his Olympic plans, admitted that his feelings about the former Barcelona and AC Milan star had changed.

“I previously thought he deserved to be called up but not this time,” Menezes was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

“Many times players are made scapegoats. He is not responsible for the success or the failure of the Brazilian team. I have a lot of respect for him,” he added.

Menezes expressed optimism over Ronaldinho’s return. “Some players are capable of coming back and surprising us. Ronaldinho is one of those.”

There was better news for AC Milan’s Alexandre Pato, who was recalled to the team after a series of injury problems.

Squad:
Goalkeepers: Jefferson (Botafogo), Neto (Fiorentina), Rafael (Santos)
Defenders: Daniel Alves (Barcelona), Marcelo (Real Madrid), Danilo, Alex Sandro (both Porto), Thiago Silva (AC Milan), David Luiz (Chelsea), Bruno Uvini (Tottenham Hotspur), Juan (Inter Milan)
Midfielders: Casemiro, Lucas (both Sao Paulo), Sandro (Tottenham Hotspur), Romulo (Vasco da Gama), Paulo Henrique Ganso (Santos), Oscar (Internacional), Giuliano (Dnipropetrovsk)
Forwards: Alexandre Pato (AC Milan), Hulk (Porto), Leandro Damiao (Internacional), Neymar (Santos), Wellington Nem (Fluminense).

Corinthians to make Pato offer at end of season

Rio de Janeiro, May 11 (IANS) Brazilian football club Corinthians will wait until the end of the season to make a formal offer for AC Milan striker Alexandre Pato.

Corinthians’ coach Tite had spoken to the 22-year-old by telephone to express the club’s interest in a summer move, reported Xinhua.
The conversation was reportedly organized by Tite’s agent, Gilmar Veloz, who also manages the Brazil international forward.
“It’s not the right time to talk about it. We will wait until the end of the season to give it more thought,” Veloz said.
Corinthians are in need of a striker after the March departure of former Inter Milan and Roma forward Adriano.
The club’s continued interest in Pato comes after talks with Uruguayan strikers Diego Forlan and Villarreal’s Nilmar reportedly stalled.
Corinthians football manager Edu Gaspar confirmed the Sao Paulo club were hoping to speak to Pato after this weekend’s final round of matches in Italy’s Serie A.
“We are waiting for the end of the season but it’s a deal that needs to start from their end,” Gaspar said.
