Rio de Janeiro, Feb 6 (IANS) Santos star striker Neymar scored his 100th career goal on his 20th birthday but it did not ensure victory for his side.
The highly anticipated goal came in the 70th minute as team mate Paulo Henrique Ganso drove a free kick from the lower left side of the field towards the front of the Palmeiras net. Neymar leaped into the air and headed the ball past keeper Deola before starting to celebrate.
Despite Neymar’s historic goal Sunday, he was unable to help Santos as Palmeiras rallied to win 2-1 in the fifth round of the Sao Paulo state championship, Xinhua reported.
Neymar has scored 82 goals with Santos while his other 18 were scored with the Brazilian national youth and senior teams.
With a contract valid until July 2014, Neymar has high hopes of establishing new records with Santos.

Drilling reached a final depth of 3,295 meters.
Tests indicate the find has the capacity to produce 1,400 barrels per day of good-quality light oil and 45,000 cubic meters per day of natural gas, Petrobras said Friday.

Rio de Janeiro, Feb 3 (IANS) Flamengo head coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo was fired, just one day after leading the team to qualification in the 2012 Libertadores Cup group stage.
No replacement has been named yet. However, both Joel Santana and Renato Gaucho are in the running.
Fans displayed mixed feelings with the release of Luxemburgo. Some feel that he was used and that the club manipulated him. Others believe that the coach has been unsuccessful in corralling the talent of Ronaldinho, resulting in a disappointing performance over the past year.
Due to a clause in Luxemburgo’s contract, Flamengo will be forced to pay the coach nearly $2 million in compensation for terminating his contract early, Xinhua reported.
With Luxemburgo no longer in command of Flamengo, controversial striker Adriano may very well find himself returning to the club.
A conflict between Luxemburgo and Adriano previously barred the player from transferring to Flamengo. With Luxemburgo out of the way, fans may get what they have been asking for. The striker’s contract with Corinthians expires in June and the team has already expressed its interest in disposing of him.

Rio de Janeiro, Feb 2 (IANS/EFE) Brazilian authorities Wednesday rescued 52 farm workers who were being held in slave-like conditions on three ranches in the Amazon state of Para, the government said.
Four of the workers were minors – a 15-year-old girl who worked as a cook and boys aged 13, 14 and 16 who cut wood or worked in the fields, the labor ministry said in a statement.
Workers were living with their children in seven canvas tents that had been erected on the rural properties.
The ministry imposed fines totalling 168,900 reais ($97,630), which the ranch owners are to pay to the workers.
Brazilian authorities last year rescued 2,271 workers subjected to degrading conditions in 158 operations, meting out a total of 5.4 million reais ($3.1 million) in fines.
The government also maintains a “black list” of 294 companies that have been denounced for holding workers in slave-like conditions.
The list is publicly available and prevents those companies from applying for loans at public-sector banks.
Several industries and exporters’ and supermarket associations also use the list to crack down on the sale of products from companies that use slave labour.
