Raipur, Jan 8 – Two days after dozens of tribal people threw eggs and tomatoes at social activist Medha Patkar and several of her associates in Maoist violence-hit Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh, she Friday alleged it was a ‘state government-sponsored protest’.
‘It was all a government-sponsored protest in Dantewada in police presence. Those who threw eggs and tomatoes were brought from a relief camp by the government,’ Patkar told a press conference here.
Looking furious over the treatment she received Wednesday in Dantewada, about 380 km south of capital Raipur, Patkar said she wanted Thursday to meet Kopa Kunjam, a jailed Maoist sympathizer being kept in Dantewda jail but authorities allegedly forced Kunjam to refuse to meet her.
Trouble began in Dantewada when Patkar, Magsaysay Award winner Sandeep Pandey and a few activists reached the town to join the ongoing campaign of rights activists against alleged atrocities being committed by security forces on local tribes.
A large number of tribals, under the banner of ‘Ma Danteshwari Swabhiman Manch’ chased the activists accusing them of supporting Maoist sympathisers, who are trying to stall the anti-Maoist operations in the restive Bastar region.
Even at Raipur Press club when she was addressing mediamen, several kids orphaned in Maoist violence in the restive Bastar region staged protest and raised slogans against Patkar and her associates for their alleged support to Maoist sympathisers in name of human rights protection.

Raipur, Jan 8 – The Chhattisgarh High Court has issued a warrant against Amit Jogi, son of Congress leader and state’s first chief minister Ajit Jogi, in connection with the murder of a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader.
A two-member division bench of the High Court in Bilaspur issued the bailable warrant Thursday against 33-year-old Amit, currently practising as a lawyer in the same court, in response to a review petition filed by Satish, son of murdered NCP politician Ramavatar Jaggi.
An elated Satish Friday said: ‘I will do my best to ensure that Amit does not walk away this time without being punished by the court. The lower court acquittal was very disappointing. I will strive for justice.’
Jaggi, then NCP Chhattisgarh state unit treasurer, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the heart of state capital Raipur on June 4, 2003 when Ajit Jogi was the chief minister.
The victim’s family and NCP leaders named Jogi and his son as prime suspects in an FIR lodged hours after the killing.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which ousted the Congress in December 2003 assembly polls, handed over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The investigating agency arrested Amit twice and booked 29 persons in the case, making Amit the prime accused.
But a district and sessions court here acquitted Amit of murder charges in May 2007 while it convicted 28 others, of which 19, including two long-time associates of Amit, were given life imprisonment.

Raipur, Jan 7 – The Chhattisgarh government Thursday agreed, in principle, to the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) request for 2,500-3,000 acres for setting up an air base in the state, officials said.
The state government gave its go-ahead to the proposal when senior IAF officers called on Chief Minister Raman Singh.
‘Singh has agreed in principle to the IAF proposal for setting up its first base in the state for which they said they need 2,500-3,000 acres,’ an official said.
The IAF officers told the chief minister that they have short-listed four sites in Bilaspur, Durg, Mahasamund and Raipur districts and they will select the final site very soon.
Singh assured the IAF team that the state government would ensure that land was handed over as soon as possible for early setting up of the air force base in the state that came into existence in November 2000 after a split of Madhya Pradesh.
