Pune, May 3 (IANS) Top seeded Vasisht Cheruku will take on Raghav Jaisinghani in the boys finals while Mihika Yadav will clash with Zeel Desai for the girls title at the PCLTA Cup Asian under-14 tennis tournament here Friday.

In the boys singles semi-finals Thursday, top seeded Vasisht Cheruku from Karnataka scored a 6-4, 7-5 win over fourth seeded Abhimanyu Vannemreddy while second seeded Indore lad, Raghav Jaisinghani stopped the winning run of Maharashtra’s Rian Pandole 6-4, 6-0.

Pune Warriors banking on Clarke against Mumbai Indians

Pune, May 2 (IANS) Pune Warriors will be banking on Australian captain Michael Clarke to bring back their Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign on track when they face Mumbai Indians at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium here Thursday.

Clarke, who had shunned IPL contract in the previous editions, finally made his much awaited debut in the richest Twenty20 league against Deccan Chargers, Tuesday night. Though he ended up on the losing side Clarke made a quick 41 off 31 balls to send ominous signals to the opponents.

Pune Warriors, captained by Sourav Ganguly, made an impressive start this season but lost way soon and are now on a three-match losing streak. They hope that the return of Clarke brings back some luck in the second leg of the Maharashtra derby.

Pune had the last laugh in the first leg beating Mumbai Indians by 28 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in their first match of the season. Mumbai are eager to take revenge of the loss at home and they are riding high after a big win over Deccan Chargers in their last match that propelled them to the third position in the points table.

Mumbai Indians in their last five matches notched only two victories, which were not convincing. Against Kings XI Punjab in which chasing a target of 169, Ambati Rayudu’s cameo of 34 off 17 balls helped them win with a ball to spare. In their last match against Deccan Chargers, they struggled while chasing a target of 101.

Mumbai Indians’ batting depends on Rohit Sharma (230) and Rayudu (207). A scintillating innings from Tendulkar is long overdue. Since his comeback into the team after his finger injury, Tendulkar has scored 94 runs from five innings with an average of 23.00.

Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga has been the performer of the season for Mumbai Indians with 15 wickets from six matches. Medium pacers Munaf Patel and Kieron Pollard with 11 wickets each have been assisting their premium bowler with wickets at key intervals of the game.

But skipper Harbhajan Singh’s form with the ball remains a worry. The off-spinner has just three wickets from eight matches, giving away 219 runs at an economy of 7.30.

Pune Warriors have a formidable batting line-up to take on Mumbai Indians. The addition of Clarke has only boosted the confidence of the side.

Pune’s bowling is suffering due to the absence of their fast bowler Ashok Dinda, who has been sidelined due to an injury. The last five matches that he missed, Pune Warriors have suffered badly. Left arm pacer Ashish Nehra have proved costly at the death overs.

Activist’s killing: Eight cops to undergo polygraph test

Pune, May 2 (IANS) A Maharashtra court here Wednesday granted permission to the CBI to conduct polygraph test on at least nine accused, who include eight policemen, in the 2010 murder of transparency activist Satish Shetty, an official said.

The court’s clearance came on the appeal filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for the test on the accused — who also include a businessman — to solve the case of Shetty’s killing Jan 13, 2010, a probe agency official told reporters.

‘Almost all of them have volunteered to undergo the polygraph test. We hope it will help us solve the crime,’ a CBI lawyer said.

Among those who will undergo the lie-detector test are IRB construction company’s Virendra Mhaiskar and eight policemen, including then inspector Bhausaheb Andhalkar and others who investigated the Shetty case.

‘I am ready for the polygraph test. I am innocent and the polygraph test will prove,’ Andhalkar said after the court ruling.

Sandeep, brother of the murdered right to information activist Shetty, said that all the cases which he investigated pertained to land deals, including some in which IRB’s Mhaiskar and others were involved.

‘I submitted the list of the suspects to the court soon after the murder… now that polygraph tests are ordered, the truth will emerge,’ Sandeep Shetty said.

Shetty, 38, was killed by unidentified people near his house in Talegaon on the outskirts of Pune.

He was credited with throwing light on several land scams in the picturesque Talegaon-Lonavala region. He also exposed alleged corruption in land deals related to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway over a decade ago.

Tendulkar says no to politics after RS nomination

Pune, May 1 (IANS) Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar Tuesday broke his silence over his Rajya Sabha nomination, saying he was honoured by the Indian government’s offer but he would always remain a sportsman and not a politician.

‘It is an honour when the President nominates your name. I was excited to be nominated,’ Tendulkar said at a ceremony here where he was felicitated for making 100 international hundreds.

The 39-year-old acknowledged that he was honoured for his outstanding contribution to cricket and said he will try his best to improve the standard of all sports in the country.

‘I would definitely like to contribute in the field of sports because that is my expertise and I will need your (fans) help.’

‘I believe President (Pratibha Patil) has chosen me after recognising what I have done for over 22 years,’ he said referring to greats in other fields like singer Lata Mangeshkar and actor Prithviraj Kapoor.

The batting legend’s entry into Rajya Sabha has evoked mixed reactions with some raising concerns whether Tendulkar will be able to give time to the high-profile job while playing for India.

Tendulkar, who was also given the honorary rank of Group Captain in the Indian Air Force in 2010, was nominated by the government for a seat in the upper house of parliament last week alongside actress Rekha and industrialist Anu Aga.

Asked what keeps him going despite two-decades in international cricket, Tendulkar said: ‘I am passionate about cricket. Cricket is my life. Keep praying for me so that I can derive strength from it.’
