‘High proportion of HIV+ women report domestic abuse’

Pune, May 6 (IANS) A high proportion of HIV positive women report domestic violence than HIV negative women, says a latest study by the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune.

Conducted in a tertiary care hospital in Pune on a randomly selected sample of 150 married women, of which 75 each were HIV positive and negative, the study showed that overall, 33.3 percent of HIV positive married women reported acts of domestic violence inflicted upon them.

Of these, physical violence was reported by 29.3 percent women, emotional violence by 14.7 percent and sexual violence by 5.3 percent victims.

In contrast, 56 percent of the total HIV positive married women reported domestic violence. Of these, 46.7 percent women experienced physical violence, emotional abuse 33.3 percent and sexual abuse by 24 percent.

The study titled ‘Measuring domestic violence in HIV positive women’ has been published in the Medical Journal of Armed Forces of India (MJAFI).

The study has been authored by Seema Patrikar, lecturer (Statistics and Demography), Department of Community Medicine, AFMC Pune; Brig A.K. Verma, Commandant, Military Hospital, Dehradun, Uttarakhand; Lt Col V.K. Bhatti, Associate Professor, Department of Community Medicine, AFMC, Pune and Lt S. Shatabdi, Medical Officer, Base Hospital, Delhi Cantonment.

‘Violence and the fear of violence are emerging as important risk factors contributing to the vulnerability of HIV infection for women,’ the study said.

HIV positive status, rural residence, number of children, and alcohol consumption by husbands were significant factors putting women at higher risk of domestic violence.

‘Physicians should ask their patients routinely about domestic violence and when domestic violence is present, should offer emotional and psychological care,’ the study suggested.

Pune varsity guard shot dead

Pune, May 4 (IANS) A security guard of the University of Pune was shot dead by an unidentified youth in the campus Thursday night, sending shockwaves among the student community here, police said Friday.

The incident occurred around 8 p.m., when the 56-year-old security guard, Prahlad Jogdandkar, caught a young couple allegedly in a compromising position in an isolated spot on the 410-acre lush green university campus.

He ordered them to pay a penalty of Rs.500 as per the new rules implemented by the university to check trespassing and shady activities on the campus.

The youth quietly paid up and left with his girlfriend on his motorcycle, said an officer at the Chaturshringi police station.

However, the youth returned again after half an hour and demanded Rs.100 back from the security guard since he had no money to fill up petrol in his motorcycle.

When Jogdandkar refused to refund the money, there was an argument and a scuffle, and another security guard rushed there.

Suddenly, the youth whipped out a revolver and fired two rounds at Jogdandkar, and disappeared from the spot.

Jogdandkar was rushed to the Sassoon Hospital where he was later declared dead on admission, police said.

As part of the overall security overhauling in the city, in January, following a police directive, the university administration had beefed up security on the sprawling campus.

Besides registering all vehicles entering the campus, all visitors were required to enter their details at the two main gates to prevent unauthorised people from entering and misusing the campus.

The University of Pune falls in a high-security zone, which includes the Raj Bhavan Pune and other important buildings.

Mumbai Indians edge out Pune Warriors by one run

Pune, May 4 (IANS) Mumbai Indians edged out Pune Warriors by one run in a low-scoring Indian Premier League (IPL) match here Thursday.

Pune should have chased down Mumbai’s 120 for nine considering the batting conditions at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium but ended at 119 for six.

Mithun Manhas’ unbeaten 42 went in vain as the hosts failed to get 12 runs off the last over bowled by Munaf Patel (1-24). Fast bowler Lasith Malinga (2-25) got the important breakthroughs once again while Harbhajan Singh (2-18) came back to form with a tidy spell.

Mumbai are now third in the points table with 16 points from 10 games while Pune are lying at eighth place after four losses in a row. They now have eight points from 11 matches.

Pune let the Mumbai bowlers dictate terms by going on the defensive in the run-chase.

Harbhajan struck early to put pressure on Pune, removing the dangerous Jessy Ryder (9) and Michael Clarke (14) to make it 44 for three in the ninth over.

Sourav Ganguly (16) then played second fiddle to Manhas and took the team closer to the total. But Malinga, as he often does, broke the 47-run stand for the fifth wicket by castling the stumps of the Pune skipper.

The home team needed 18 off the last 12 balls and it was again Malinga, who made the difference, giving away just fours runs in the over besides sending pack Wayne Parnell (2).

Earlier, Mumbai failed to capitalise on a good start provided by Sachin Tendulkar (34) and James Franklin (25), who shared a 50-run stand at the top.

Tendulkar’s dismissal in the 12th over triggered the collapse as the next fours wickets fell for 12 runs, leaving Mumbai at 93 for 7.

Most batsmen got out playing lost shots in an innings that included four run outs.

Nehra (2-19), who has proved expensive in the tournament, gave away only five runs after leaking 14 runs in his first over and also picked up the important wicket of Tendulkar.

Warriors restrict Mumbai Indians to 120/9

Pune, May 3 (IANS) Mumbai Indians made 120 for nine against Pune Warriors in an Indian Premier League match at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium here Thursday.

Sachin Tendulkar top-scored with 34 while his opening partner James Franklin made 25.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ashish Nehra took two wickets each for Pune.
