New Delhi, May 21 (IANS) M.C. Mary Kom, India’s sole woman boxer at the london Olympics, will train with her male counterparts in Patiala ahead of the summer extravaganza.
The five-time world champion had lady luck to thank as she qualified for the Olympics after England’s Nicola Adams advanced to the finals of the World Boxing Championships in Qinhuangdao, China. After Mary Kom lost in the quarterfinals to Nicola Wednesday, the Indian’s Olympic qualification hinged on the latter’s progress in the tournament.
“I need to improve all my aspects of fighting. I have to workout more and I have to improve mentally. I have seen a lot of videos of my rivals and analysed them a lot. I will be going to Patiala to train with the boys and I think that will improve me further,” she told reporters here Monday.
Talking about her loss to the eventual champion, she said: “In this sport you have your ups and downs, it happens. It was the first time I fought a European boxer at the Worlds.
The Manipuri returned empty-handed from the world event for the first time.
“I couldn’t come back with a medal but I don’t mind that much, it is just a game. At the Olympics, I am confident of beating the English boxers. I have learnt a lot (from the defeat) and now I know their technique.”
Mary Kom, who will be appearing at an Olympics for the first time after 51, 60 and 75 kgs weight categories were included in the competition, was confident of a good show in london.
“Olympics will not be that tough only as selected boxers will fight there. In the Worlds, there were close to 55 boxers. The championships were very tough because everyone was there for the qualifiers. Even the Chinese 60 and 75 kgs boxer were not able to qualify (for Olympics).”
She said it was a difficult proposition for her to change weight categories. Mary Kom won most of her titles in 48 kg category.
“It is a big challenge for me changing weight categories. If I was fighting in the 48 kgs I would be the champion. I have already defeated the champion from the Philippines thrice so it is easy.”
Mary Kom said that winning a medal at the Olympics will bring her fame.
“I am a five-time world champion but I am not happy with that, nobody knows me yet. If I win a medal at Olympics I will become popular, it is difficult for me to get sponsors,” an emotional Mary Kom said.

New Delhi, May 21 (IANS) Four days after an American woman alleged she was molested by Australian cricketer luke Pomersbach, playing in the Indian Premier league (IPl), the case took a new turn Monday with the cricketer telling the police that he inadvertently touched the victim as he was under the influence of alcohol, police sources said.
A police officer claimed that Pomersbach, who plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPl, has confessed that he was under the influence of alcohol and inadvertently touched the victim.
According to the officer, the name of another IPl cricketer belonging to the RCB team K.P. Appanna has also cropped up in the case as he was found accompanying Pomersbach to the room of the victim.
“Appanna’s name came to light after he was seen in CCTV footage recovered from Maurya Sheraton hotel where the American woman was molested during a party,” said the officer.
Police spoke to Appanna, a leg spinner who plays for Karnataka in Ranji Trophy. But the cops have not formally questioned him yet, said the officer.
The officer informed that they were yet to ascertain whether Appanna entered the room where the victim was staying.
Pomersbach was arrested Friday after the victim Zohail Hamid alleged that he molested her and hit her fiance Sahil Peerzada when he objected to the cricketer’s behaviour. Peerzada was punched in his ear following which he had to undergo a surgery.
The official said that Peerzada, who is a friend of RCB owner Siddhartha Mallya, was invited to the post-match party at the hotel.
At the time of the incident, Peerzada was present along with his fiancee, his friends Moiz and Miraj, and Pomersbach.
Pomersbach misbehaved with Hameed in the party.
“When she left the party along with Peerzada, she was followed by Pomersbach and Appanna after a few minutes,” said the official.
Appanna had come to ask whether Mallya was there in the room, the official said, adding Zohail had also corroborated this.
The official informed that they had recorded Moiz’s statement too.
Zohail had alleged in her complaint to police Friday that five to six members of the IPl team had pressurised her to withdraw the case against Pomersbach.
Police is not ruling out the possibility that she was pressurised to withdraw the complaint against Pomersbach.

New Delhi, May 21 (IANS) The much-awaited lokpal bill was Monday sent to a select committee of the Rajya Sabha soon after being taken up in the house after a gap of more than four months.
Even as leader of Opposition Arun Jaitely questioned if the government wanted to pass the lokpal bill at all and amidst mixed opinions from various parties, the upper house passed a motion to send the bill to a select committee.
The suggestion for sending the bill to a select committee was first made by Naresh Agarwal of the Samajwadi Party who moved an amendment on this, irking opposition parties who accused the government of using the SP member as a shield.
However, Minister of State of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions V. Narayanasamy soon moved another motion to send the bill to a select committee. The motion was passed by voice vote.

New Delhi, May 21 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Monday shifted the probe into the death of a right to information activist in a road accident here last month to the crime branch of Delhi Police and sought fortnightly reports on the investigation.
Activist and retired government employee Ravinder Balwani, an aide of Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal and a member of his NGO Parivartan, was hit by a car April 23. He succumbed to head injuries three days later. The victim’s family alleged he was murdered.
The division bench of Acting Chief Justice A.K. Sikri and Justice R.S. Endlaw said: “In regard of the seriousness of the matter, the investigation shall be conducted by the crime branch and the progress file of the investigation shall be submitted to this court every fortnight.”
No arrests have been made and police claim there were no witnesses to the incident in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj market where Balwani was found injured.
Police told the court that Balwani died in a hit-and-run incident and a first information report had been registered in Vasant Kunj police station.
Balwani retired in 2010 from the Delhi government-owned power utility Delhi Transco. He joined Kejriwal’s NGO Parivartan as an RTI activist and exposed corruption in power deals.
The court’s order came after counsel for Delhi’s lokayukta told it about a letter written by Balwani, expressing threat to his life.
The letter was written by Balwani before his death and was addressed to the lokayukta. It was sent to the anti-corruption watchdog by the victim’s son after his death, counsel said, while presenting the letter in court.
The court was hearing a plea filed by the lokayukta against the court’s earlier order which said that the watchdog had no jurisdiction to probe allegations against Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers as they enjoyed immunity.
In 2009, the lokayukta had summoned some IAS officers, posted with Delhi Transco, on Balwani’s complaint against them for their involvement in alleged corruption.

New Delhi, May 21 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) dismissed as “disappointing” the government’s white paper on black money Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee tabled in the lok Sabha Monday.
Addressing a press conference here, BJP leader Jaswant Singh said Monday the white paper was like a “bikini” which “hides the essential and reveals the unessential”.
“It is a disappointing document… It is a missed opportunity towards taking a step towards cleansing the country’s public life and regenerating vigour in our economy,” he said.
“There is no quantification of black money; it does not give any names; nor does it give steps the government will take to bring the money back,” Singh said.
The government Monday released the much-awaited white paper on black money, which makes a strong pitch for setting up the lokpal and lokayuktas but carries no official estimate of the illicit money stashed by Indians abroad.
The paper quotes figures released by different agencies.
