Nagpur woman, world’s shortest, eyes acting career

Nagpur, Dec 17 (IANS) Nagpur woman Jyoti Amge, declared the world’s shortest woman by Guinness World Records, is all set to act in a Kannada movie slated for release next year.

‘I always wanted to make a career in acting. This title of world’s shortest woman will take my career to new heights,’ Amge, who stands 62.8 cm tall, told IANS Saturday.

It was double celebration for Amge, who was given the title Friday – her 18th birthday.

Amge was measured three times over the day before she was given the title. Doctors at the city’s Wockhardt Hospital measured her in presence of Rob Molloy, the official adjudicator for Guinness World Records.

Amge wept with joy as she was presented a certificate, in the presence of her father, Kisan, 55, and mother, Ranjana, 50.

‘I am really very very happy that I was given this title. I cannot express in words, what this means to me,’ she told IANS.

‘I am doing a Kannada film and will be shooting in Mysore soon. I will also be in Europe for two months in the coming summer,’ she said.

When asked if she would join an acting school, Amge said she knows the basics well and does not need to learn it.

‘I would do exactly what my director expects out of the scene. What is the need to learn something in a school when you know. You learn it much better on the job,’ she asked.

Amge has a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia that has restricted her height to that of an average four-month-old baby girl. She has just passed her Class 10 exam and intends to take up acting full time.

The previous holder of the record for the world’s shortest living woman title was 69.49 cm-tall Bridgette Jordan, from Illinois, in the US.

Maharashtra wants Belgaum to be declared union territory

Nagpur, Dec 16 (IANS) In a new dimension to the Maharashtra-Karnataka boundary dispute, the Maharashtra assembly Friday passed a unanimous motion urging the centre to declare Belgaum in Karnataka as a union territory till the Supreme Court delivers its final verdict on the dispute.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, who was replying to an adjournment motion on the issue moved by Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai, also assured the house that he would lead an all-party delegation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the issue.

However, Speaker Dilip Walse-Patil declined the adjournment motion and said that an all-party meeting with the government would consider all the views on the contentious issue.

After uproarious scenes leading to four adjournments on the issue, the assembly met again to debate the matter. Desai, who had proposed the earlier adjournment motion, said that the Karnataka government was deliberately suppressing the voice of the Marathi-speaking people of Belgaum and surrounding areas and subjecting them to ‘atrocities.’

The assembly unanimously demanded that the central government should take appropriate action against Karnataka for dissolving the Belgaum City Corporation Council (BCCC) Thursday and appointing an administrator.

The assembly members said Karnataka must immediately re-instate the BCCC, which has nearly three-and-a-half-years of its tenure remaining.

Karnataka’s action came ostensibly since the BCCC is controlled by the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samithi (MES) which has been demanding merger of the Marathi-speaking areas of the region with Maharashtra.

Speaking on the debate, Chavan said that the Karnataka government’s drastic step against a linguistic minority was ‘unjust and unfair’ and its step had led to consternation among the people of Maharashtra.

The three-point resolution finally adopted by the assembly unanimously has demanded: Belgaum and surrounding areas must be declared as union territory till the final verdict of the apex court, the BCCC should be re-instated and an all-party delegation would meet President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the issue.

Though some Congress and Shiv Sena members demanded that the central government should dismiss the Karnataka government on this issue, the point did not figure in the final resolution adopted by the assembly, as it was opposed by members of the the Bharatiya Janata Party, which rules the state.

The Karnataka government’s step has been severely castigated by all political parties in Maharashtra and evoked a sharp reaction from Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray.

The Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute has been simmering since 1948, and erupted into a major political controversy from 1956 after Belgaum was included in the neighbouring state.

Maharashtra has been demanding the inclusion of Belgaum and other surrounding areas into this state (Maharashtra) as the majority population there comprised Marathi-speaking people.

It has also moved a petition in the Supreme Court demanding the inclusion of Belgaum and other areas since the Marathi-speaking people there felt ‘insecure’. The apex court’s verdict is awaited.

Declare Belgaum union territory, demands Maharashtra

Nagpur, Dec 16 (IANS) Adding a new dimension to the ongoing Maharashtra-Karnataka boundary dispute, the Maharashtra assembly Friday urged the central government to declare Karnataka’s Belgaum as a union territory till the final verdict of the Supreme Court on the issue.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, who was replying to an adjournment motion on the issue, also said that he would lead an all-party delegation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the matter.

The assembly unanimously demanded that the central government should take appropriate action against the Karnataka government for its move Thursday dissolving the Belgaum City Corporation Council (BCCC) and appointing an administrator.

The state assembly members demanded that the Karnataka government must immediately reinstate the BCCC which has a tenure of nearly three and a half years remaining.

The Karnataka government’s action came ostensibly since the BCCC is controlled by the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samithi (MES) which has been demanding merger of the Marathi-speaking areas of the region with Maharashtra.

The Karnataka government’s step has been severely castigated by all political parties in Maharashtra and evoked a sharp reaction from Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray.

Vinod Tawde new opposition leader in Maharashtra council

Nagpur, Dec 16 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Vinod Tawde has been appointed the new Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, replacing Pandurang Phundkar, a top party official said here Friday.

A formal announcement was made here by senior party leader Venkaiah Naidu after holding a meeting with party legislators, at which Phundkar was not present.

Tawde, 47, considered close to party president Nitin Gadkari, will take over from Phundkar – considered a loyalist of BJP Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Gopinath Munde – Dec 23.

Phundkar has captained the BJP-led opposition in the upper house of teh state legislature for the past seven years.

In the legislative council, the opposition comprises 13 BJP members, nine Shiv Sena members and two Independents.

The decision to appoint Tawde, a skillful organiser and political strategist, was taken last month by the party leadership.

He represents the ‘youthful face’ of the BJP in the state.

However, serious intra-party differences between the Gadkari and Munde camps resulted in the decision and the change of leadership being delayed, after the high command made it clear that Tawde’s appointment would not be ‘rolled back’.

Maharashtra journalists protest attacks

Nagpur, Dec 15 (IANS) Hundreds of journalists took out a procession Thursday to the Maharashtra legislature here demanding protection from attacks on the media fraternity in the state.

The journalists, sporting black flags and raising anti-government slogans, marched from the Patrakar Bhavan in Nagpur to the legislature building where the winter session is underway.

A delegation later met Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to discuss the issue.

Chavan informed them that a report of the ministerial committee headed by Industry Minister Narayan Rane would soon be placed before the state cabinet.

‘Before that, we shall discuss with the committee members whether the media’s point of view has been considered or not before taking any final decision,’ he assured.

His response came after the delegation, comprising journalists from 16 groups, said that the committee report has been prepared without discussing the issue with them.

Condemning all such attacks, particularly on media persons, Chavan said that such instances must be dealt with strictly.

Vidharba farmers protest Chavan’s ‘peanuts’ bailout package

Nagpur, Dec 15 (IANS) A day after four farmers committed suicide in Vidarbha, farmers of Maharashtra’s eastern region Thursday staged a road blockade on two highways to press their demand of better support prices for cotton, soya and paddy.

The four suicides take the toll of farmer suicides in the state to 722 in 2011 alone.

The protest also comes a day after Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan declared a bailout package worth Rs.2,000 crore for the crisis ridden farmers of the state.

The farmers described the package as ‘a pittance’.

‘The farmers might settle for something that is close to their losses. But a mere Rs.2,000 crore package is not even worth peanuts,’ said Kishor Tiwari, president of Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), an activist group working for cotton farmers’ rights in Vidarbha.

Supporting the agitation in a unique way were residents of Ralegaon, a small village in Yavatmal district, 160 km from Nagpur. Over 50 residents of the village shaved off their heads, stating that they are undertaking the last rites of the government that is ‘dead’.

Several spots on the National Highway Nos. 6 and 7 saw agitating farmers demand Rs.6,000 as the minimum support price for raw cotton as against the market price of Rs.4,000 per quintal.

They also condemned the government for announcing a bailout package which they said makes a mockery of the sad plight of farmers.

Chavan announced the bailout package in the winter session of the assembly Wednesday stating that farmers will be compensated on a per hectare basis.

The four farmers who committed suicide are Ankush Raut of Wadki and Ashok Bhongale of Bhamada in Yavatmal district, Ramrao Kamble of Gaul in Wardha district, and Shriram Thege of Kesarwada in Bhandara district.

‘The shock of rejection of farmers’ main demand to give hike to support price in cotton, soya and paddy has reportedly led to their suicide. A pittance of a bailout package added to their depression,’ Tiwari said.
