Inflation, industrial output data flawed: RBI governor

Mumbai, July 5 (IANS) The data on industrial output and inflation is flawed as it does not reflect the correct picture and could ‘potentially mislead policy calculations’, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Duvvuri Subbarao said Tuesday.

‘The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) has shown counter-intuitive trends,’ Subbarao said while referring to recent unusual fluctuations in the industrial output data.

The RBI governor pointed out that, according to the then available IIP series, IIP growth was positive during the period of global economic crisis — December 2008 to June 2009.

‘This was contrary to our assessment of the underlying trend of some deceleration on account of the crisis. The new IIP series, revised with 2004-05 as the base, now shows that IIP growth was, in fact, negative during that period vindicating our intuition,’ he said.

‘Again, the old IIP series indicated that industrial activity slowed in the second half of 2010-11 relative to the first half but the revised IIP series shows that industrial growth maintained roughly the same pace between the two halves of the fiscal year,’ the RBI governor said, adding that the poor quality of data ‘could potentially mislead policy calculations’.

The government last month changed the base year of the IIP data calculation to 2004-05 from the old calculation base of 1993-94. Though the updated base has corrected some anomalies, the data still suffers from volatility.

On inflation data, Subbarao said the headline inflation index based on the wholesale prices was also not a true reflection of the impact of price rise on the common people.

‘The use of wholesale price index (WPI) as the headline inflation index is flawed as it does not capture the final goods prices that consumers actually experience in the market,’ he said.

He said the RBI should be guided more by the consumer price index (CPI) which more accurately reflects demand pressures because it is demand pressures that monetary policy action can influence.

The central bank’s policy decisions are generally guided by the inflation based on wholesale price index. The wholesale price index (WPI) is based on 2004-05 prices and tracks 555 items.

Writers, directors share maximum credit for my success: Aamir

Mumbai, July 5 (IANS) As an actor, producer and director, Aamir Khan hasn’t gone wrong in past few years and the star says the writers and the directors of his movies should be applauded for the success.

‘If you are saying Aamir you have so many successes, I am not a solo player. It’s a team effort and in the team the two main people are not me – one is writer and the other is director,’ Aamir told IANS.

In the recent past, Aamir has produced unconventional films like ‘Peepli Live’, ‘Dhobi Ghat’ and recently released ‘Delhi Belly’. All the films set the cash registers ringing.

‘I don’t have the magic touch. Yes, I have accepted those films and I have accepted the unusual films, so you can give me credit for that. I had the good sense to say yes to them, I had the good sense to work good in them and I was fortunate to have a good team in these films,’ he said.

Often referred to as Mr. Perfectionist, Aamir said: ‘There are many reasons for which the films have been successful. Every film of mine which has become successful has first originated in the mind of a writer with whom I have no connection, neither have I given the idea to him.’

”Laagan’ came in Ashutosh’s mind and when he came to me, his script was totally complete and I loved it. My contribution to the script is zero. ‘Peepli Live’, ‘Rang De Basanti’, ‘Taare Zameen Par’ all of these films are written by different writers, some of them are writer-director together.

‘Now, had not these beautiful scripts not come to me, I would have not been able to be part of these films. The other creative talents who have contributed to the success of the film also share the equal credit for it.’

The 46-year-old is grateful to have so many successful films under his belt.

‘I am very grateful that I have so many films that are successful and I feel that I am very fortunate,’ he said.

Mumbai, July 5 (IANS) German luxury car manufacturer Audi Tuesday reported a 100 percent increase in its sales for the first half of the calendar year.

It has sold 2,802 cars from January to June 2011 as compared to 1,400 units sold in the corresponding period last year.

‘Audi India has adopted an aggressive product strategy this year with the launch of a slew of class-defining models,’ the company said in a statement.

The statement further said that China has overtaken Germany as the single biggest market for Audi, while the Indian and US markets were the fastest growing regions for the company.

Currently, the company offers a range of cars including A4, A6, A8, A7 Sportback, Q5, Q7, RS5, R8 and R8 Spyder.

Neil to be more visible on big screen next year

Mumbai, July 5 (IANS) Actor Neil Nitin Mukesh, who has just finished shooting Abbas Mustan’s ‘Players’, says he has signed three films and all of them will release next year.

‘There will be a lot of me next year. There are three films that I have signed, but I am not allowed to talk about them right now. All are very interesting subjects. You are going to see a lot more new avatars of me,’ Neil told IANS.

He was off the media glare for a long time as he was busy shooting for ‘Players’ until now, said Neil.

‘This year ‘Players’ took a lot of my time. I was committed to ‘Players’ and I do one film at a time,’ said Neil who was last seen in director Vishal Bhardwaj’s ’7 Khoon Maaf’.

‘Players’ is the official remake of the Hollywood film ‘The Italian Job’ where, apart from Neil, the cast includes Abhishek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu and Sonam Kapoor.

Neil claims that, courtesy director duo Abbas Mustan, the film is shaping up quite close to its original version.

‘It’s an official remake of ‘The Italian Job’ and with Abbas bhai Mastan bhai making it in Hindi you can guess how close it could be of the original film,’ said Neil.

‘Players’ is set to hit theatres Dec 23.

Film on Neeraj Grover’s murder psyches out actor

Mumbai, July 5 (IANS) If hearing a gruesome murder story can give you gooseflesh, then playing a pivotal role in a film inspired by television executive Neeraj Grover’s murder can affect your mind, says actor Deepak Dobriyal.

Deepak stars in ‘Not A Love Story’, a crime thriller helmed by Ram Gopal Varma that comes out Aug 19, which features Mahie Gill and Ajay Gehi.

‘The way Ramuji used to narrate the story or the scene to us, it used to really shake us up. During initial shooting days, I couldn’t sleep at night because I used to get those visions. It really affected me mentally. But that was important also because I had to be completely in my character to act it in front of the camera,’ Deepak told IANS in an interview.

‘I got really psyched out in the beginning and used to get up at night. But then I got used to it and the feeling sank in,’ added the actor who was seen in films like ‘Tanu Weds Manu’, ‘Teen Thay Bhai’, ‘Gulaal’, ‘Delhi 6′ and ‘Omkara’.

Neeraj Grover was murdered in 2008 and it led to the arrest of Kannada actress Maria Susairaj and her boyfriend Emile Jerome Mathew. According to reports, Grover was stabbed and then cut in 300 pieces.

Maria was sentenced to three years in jail last week for destroying evidence in the Grover murder case. Since she had already served more than three years as an undertrial, she was ordered to be released once she had paid the compensation amount of Rs.50,000 to the victim’s family.

Her co-accused and fiance, ex-naval officer Mathew, was sentenced to 10 years’ jail term after the court found him ‘guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder’.

In the film, Deepak plays a possessive and aggressive lover who kills the other character and says the film is inspired by one of the most gruesome crimes of passion.

‘Instead of calling it based on the murder, it’s better that we say it was inspired by it. A lot of incidents happen around you and you tend to use aspects of them in a film. But it’s not based on that incident; there are a lot of changes,’ he said.

The first look of the film is out and it is being termed as very gory. When asked the 35-year-old actor whether people will accept so much violence, he said: ‘It is not violent.’

‘The treatment of the film makes it look violent, otherwise it is not. There are no scenes that are actually violent or gruesome, but the treatment with technical aspects and camera angle is such that it looks scary. Otherwise, there isn’t so much blood or anything,’ he said.

For the film, Deepak has also changed his look as both ‘Ramuji and I wanted a changed look. I tried the look and showed it to him and he instantly said yes and finalised it.

‘Changing the appearance was also important because the other guy in the film, his character, looks very decent; so if even I would have kept a similar look then there would have been no difference in us. So in order to create drama, I changed my look,’ he added.
