Dad’s goodwill gave me a head start: Mammootty’s son

Kochi, Feb 5 (IANS) ‘Second Show’, the debut film of Mammootty’s son Dulquar Salman, has hit the theatres and the newcomer says his father’s goodwill has given him a head start, but admits that he will have to work hard to carve a niche for himself.

‘Without doubt, his (Mammootty) goodwill has given me a head start. I know very well now that I will have to work hard because that is the only thing that will keep going forward,’ Salman told IANS.

A graduate from the US, Salman has been busy managing his father’s money matters before entering acting business. He is currently shooting for his second film, ‘Ustad Hotel’.

‘I was getting a few offers and I took the plunge after a lot of thinking. I felt if I should try my luck, so later I do not have any regrets. I am extremely happy that I decided to act as lots of offers are coming my way. I have decided to be in this profession,’ said Salman.

When asked whether his father has seen his debut film, he replied in the affirmative, adding: ‘Normally my father doesn’t say much.’ This is true as the superstar has refused to comment on his son’s film!

‘My biggest advantage is that if I have doubts, I have my father to fall back on. And while working on my debut film, I sought his advice,’ said Salman who would love to work with his dad, but added: ‘Don’t you think that I have to earn that and for that I have to put in real hard work.’

The actor, who got married to A. Sufia last December, said about his wife: ‘Language is a barrier for her but half the problem is sorted out because she lives in my home and my parents like her a lot. We have now learned to adjust to the fact that we can’t be spending a lot of time together because of my acting commitments.’

CPI-M supports nurses’ stir in Kerala

Kochi, Feb 4 (IANS) The Kerala unit of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Saturday came out in support of nurses of a private hospital here who have struck work for better pay and working conditions.

Leader of Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan called on the nurses of Lakeshore Hospital who are on strike since the past five days.

‘The management of these private hospitals charge their patients hefty fees but when it comes to paying salary for nurses, they pay them very little. I will write to the government and also to these private managements to see that this impasse ends,’ Achuthanandan told reporters after meeting the nurses.

The Kerala High Court Wednesday directed police to provide protection to the hospital after it recruited 100 new nurses after failure of talks with the striking staff.

Since November 2010, when a new organisation called United Nurses Association was formed, several hospitals had to face the wrath of staff who struck work demanding better service conditions, including higher pay.

As per government rules, the starting salary of a nurse including allowances should be in the range of Rs.8,000, but most of the private hospitals pay a mere Rs.3,500-4,000.

Chirag up against Sporting Clube

Kochi, Feb 4 (IANS) Chirag United Kerala would host Sporting Clube de Goa in an I-League football match at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium here Sunday.

Sporting Clube de Goa and Chirag United are two clubs that are at the two extremes, if their recent forms are to be taken into consideration. The Goans are on a dream run in the I-League since last few rounds with a six match unbeaten streak, while their opponents from Kerala have now lost four games on the trot.

Sporting are going into this game following a 4-2 thrashing of Pune FC at Goa, thanks partly to a brace from their Nigerian midfielder Ogba Kalu Nnanna and largely to an all-round performance from Ekendra Singh’s boys.

Chirag United were down to nine men in their last round clash against Mohun Bagan and lost to them 1-3 despite putting up a good fight.

The absence of captain and midfield general Ajayan K. would be a huge setback for Chirag, as he has to sit out due to injury. In his absence either Rehenesh T.P. or Sharath K. are expected to be in the starting eleven.

Sporting Clube stays at 27 points while Chirag have eleven points to their name.

Nurses’ strike: Court orders police protection for hospital

Kochi, Feb 1 (IANS) The Kerala High Court Wednesday directed police to provide protection to a private hospital which recruited 100 new nurses after failure of talks over the last three days to end a strike by the staff seeking better wages.

Nurses at the Lakeshore hospital here are on a strike seeking better working conditions, forcing the management to approach the court.

The hospital management informed the court that their attempts to end the strike through talks failed but since patients were suffering they had recruited 100 new nurses.

Since November 2010, when a new organisation called United Nurses Association was formed, several hospitals had to face the wrath of staff who struck work demanding better service conditions, including higher pay.

Functioning at two private hospitals, one in Ernakulam district and another in Kozhikode district, for the past few days has been affected due to nurses’ strike.

As per government rules, the starting salary of a nurse including allowances should be in the range of Rs.8,000.

‘We are getting a mere Rs.3,500-4,000 per month even after putting in three to four years’ work. This is grossly unfair because we have to also live and how is it possible with this pittance,’ said a striking nurse in Kozhikode.

Labour Minister Shibhu Baby John has directed the labour commissioner to submit a detailed report after checking the salary paid to nurses in the private sector.

‘It is now the responsibility of the labour department officials to check and verify if the private hospitals are paying the minimum wages prescribed and if there is any dereliction of duty in this matter, strong action would be taken,’ said John.

Relegation threatened Chirag United face Mohun Bagan in I-League

Kochi, Jan 30 (IANS) Time is running out for Chirag United Kerala to turn the tide in their favour. Their latest failure came Saturday as they gifted HAL Bangalore their first win of the season. They are now up against title aspirants Mohun Bagan in the 18th round I-League football match at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here Tuesday.

Mohun Bagan are also on a dry run of their own, losing three of their last five matches that might have slimmed their chances of winning the league this season.

Though they returned to winning ways in the last round against Pailan Arrows, Prasanta Banerjee would call for a confidence boosting performance from his team against Chirag prior to the all-important Kolkata derby coming on the weekend.

Chirag Kerala who are on a three match losing streak, would like to turn the tide and won’t be complaining even if they could garner a single point against the star studded Bagan line up.

Mohun Bagan would be fielding Odafa Onyeka Okolie and Sunil Chhetri upfront along with Jose Ramirez Barreto. N.P. Pradeep and defender Dhanarajan R would be there in the starting lineup for Chirag United.

‘Mohun Bagan is a very tough team to beat as they have quality players, but we have a home advantage and we will be out to win the match and secure all the points available,’ said Chirag’s Sri Lankan coach Packir Ali.

Chirag have 11 points from 16 matches while their opponents have 30 points from 17 matches, seven points adrift league leaders Dempo SC.
