Four killed in Afghanistan avalanche

Kabul, Feb 5 (IANS) At least four people were killed and six injured after an avalanche hit some villages in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province, Xinhua reported Sunday.

The incident occurred Saturday in the mountainous Arghistan district, 315 km northeast of capital city Kabul.
“Four people lost their lives and six others were injured as an avalanche hit some villages in Arghistan district yesterday,” said Sanaullah Amiri, director of the Counter-Natural Disaster Department in Badakhshan province.
The snowfall in Arghistan and adjoining areas was over one metre high, he added.
Following heavy snowfall and cold weather, over 40 people have died in the province over the last few weeks.

Five ccops among seven killed in Afghan attack

Kabul, Feb 5 (IANS) Five policemen and two civilians, including a child, died in a car bomb attack in Afghanistan’s Kandahar city Sunday.

“A car bomb (attack) carried out by the enemies and hit Kandahar city at noon today (Sunday) claimed the lives of seven people, including two civilians and five policemen,” the Kandahar provincial government said in a statement.
The former Taliban stronghold is 450 km from Kabul.
Nineteen others others were injured, Xinhua reported. A child is among those killed, the statement said.
Kandahar Governor Tooryali Weesa condemned the attack.

Seven killed in Afghan car bomb attack

Kabul, Feb 5 (IANS) At least seven people, including five police officers, were killed and 19 injured Sunday in a car bomb attack on the police headquarters in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar, BBC reported.

At least 19 people were wounded in the blast in a car park outside the police building, said the provincial government.
One resident described hearing a “heavy explosion” that shook windows followed by several minutes of gunfire.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

3,021 Afghan civilians killed in 2011: UN

Kabul, Feb 4 (IANS) A total of 3,021 civilians were killed in terrorism-related violence in 2011 in Afghanistan, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said in its annual report Saturday.

The figure indicates an eight percent increase compared with 2010, the UNAMA said. In 2010, a total of 2,790 civilians were killed in the war-ravaged country.
Some 2,332 civilians were killed by militants, 410 by Afghan and NATO-led coalition forces and 279 deaths were “unattributable”, Xinhua reported quoting the report.
The toll from suicide bomb attacks also rose dramatically last year killing some 450 civilians, up 80 percent over 2010.
The UN mission has urged the militants, the Afghan and the NATO-led troops to avoid civilian casualties.

17 Afghan militants captured

Kabul, Feb 2 (IANs) Seventeen Taliban militants were captured in Afghanistan and large quantities of explosives and drugs were seized from them by the Afghan and NATO-led forces, the interior ministry said Thursday.

The 17 were captured in the provinces of Kandahar, Zabul, Laghman and Ghazni over the past 24 hours till Thursday evening.
Six AK-47 rifles, four pistols, 195 kg of explosives, three grenades, over 45,600 kg of hashish, one motorcycle and another vehicle were seized, Xinhua reported.

Man in Afghan army uniform kills NATO soldier

Kabul, Feb 1 (IANS) A man in Afghan army uniform shot dead a NATO soldier in restive southern Afghanistan, authorities said Wednesday.

“An individual wearing an Afghan National Army uniform turned his weapon against an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service member in southern Afghanistan yesterday (Tuesday), killing one service member,” the NATO-led ISAF said in a press release.
However, the release did not identify the exact place of the incident and the nationality of the victim. It also did not say whether the attacker was detained, reported Xinhua.
Troops mainly from the US, Britain, Australia and Canada have been stationed in the southern region within the framework of ISAF to fight Taliban militants.

On Jan 20, four French soldiers were killed when an Afghan army soldier opened fire in eastern Kapisa province.
