Jammers throw mobile phones out of service in Kashmir

Srinagar/Jammu, Jan 26 – Mobile phones in many parts of Jammu and Kashmir were thrown out of service by hi-tech electronic jamming equipments Tuesday with virtually no connectivity in the state, which is on high alert following terror threats on Republic Day.

All mobile networks stopped working Tuesday morning. There was no signal on mobile phones of private service providers, including Airtel, Vodafone, Tata Indicom and Aircel.

Phones of the state-BSNL service provider did have signal but could not connect to other phones. There was also no way of reaching service providers to know why there was no signal.

Officials said services had been jammed following inputs that the militants might use mobile phones to trigger explosive devices or pass on directions on phone.

‘This has been done for security reasons,’ an official told IANS in Jammu.

On a hectic newsy day, journalists were the most hit as they complained of having a tough time sending their reports.

‘I am waiting to call my office in Delhi to file the first story of the Republic Day function on phone, but there is no way I can communicate,’ said a journalist of a national wire service.

A police officer told IANS in Srinagar that the purpose of installing the electronic jamming equipment was to ensure that the militants were prevented from setting off any pre-planted explosive devices.

‘It is a standing security precaution we take on such occasions,’ he said.

Peaceful R-Day in Kashmir, governor invites separatists to dialogue

Jammu, Jan 26 – Hundreds of school children took part in colourful parades marking the 61st Republic day of India in Jammu and Kashmir amid peaceful celebrations here under a thick security cover.

Till noon, there were no reports of any violence in the terror-riven state where violent incidents have marked the Republic Day in the past.

The main celebration was held in the winter capital Jammu, which gave a view of curfew-like situation with less presence of people on roads due to thick security cover.

Roads were dotted by security personnel, while army and paramilitary forces guarded the stadium where the main function was held.

The security cover was relaxed later and people were seen hoisting tricolours in their neighbourhoods.

Governor N.N. Vohra unfurled the tricolour at Maulana Azad Memorial stadium and asked separatist leaders to ‘settle problems through dialogue’.

He asked them to ‘seriously reflect on the untold losses suffered by the people in the past years and recognise the futility of continuing on the path of confrontation’.

All those who hold contrary beliefs should come forward to participate in a meaningful dialogue, he said.

He said the three regions of the state comprise one organic whole and the surest path to grow and prosper would be for each of the three regions to develop and prosper in complete harmony with each other.

Heavy firing at India-Pakistan border, army on alert

Jammu, Jan 26 – The Indian Army was put on alert following heavy exchange of fire at the India-Pakistan border in Jammu and Kashmir early Tuesday following a major infiltration bid, defence sources said Tuesday as the country celebrated its 61st Republic Day.

The firing, at the Kanachak sector near Akhnoor, 30 km northwest from here, started at 2 a.m. and went on four hours. Officials said Pakistani Rangers provided covering fire to a group of infiltrators. The BSF men retaliated and the guns fell silent around 6 a.m.

The Indian Army has been put on alert along the border, where the first line of defence is provided by the BSF.

Army sources said troops were put on alert after the fire started from Pakistani side. They described the firing as heavy and said it was a clear attempt by Pakistan to push terrorists into India on Republic Day.

The exchange of fire was heavy for about two hours initially. ‘Thereafter, it was intermittent firing that lasted till 6 a.m.,’ Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda told reporters.

It was the 15th ceasefire violation incident and infiltration attempt from across the border this month.

‘Pakistan is desperate to push terrorists to the Indian side,’ a senior army official said, adding that they wanted to strike on India’s national day and were unhappy with the peace in Jammu and Kashmir.

BSNL phones did have signal but could not connect to other phones. There was also no way of reaching service providers to know why there was no signal.

Officials said services had been jammed following inputs that the militants might use mobile phones to trigger explosive devices or pass on directions on phone.

‘This has been done for security reasons,’ an official told IANS over a landline phone.

Infiltration bid foiled in Jammu

Jammu, Jan 26 – An infiltration bid was foiled early Tuesday when the Border Security Force (BSF) troopers fired at a group of intruders who were trying to enter India through the Kanachak sector in Jammu and Kashmir from the Pakistani side.

BSF troopers also came under heavy Pakistani firing in Kanachak sector, about 30 km north-west of Jammu, when they challenged the infiltrators. The troopers retaliated, a BSF official said.

Pakistani intruders have been attempting to infiltrate into India almost daily this year.

Pakistani troops fire on Indian post

Jammu, Jan 25 – Pakistani troops fired four rockets at the Indian Army’s Nalla post along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district Monday, officials said.

Army sources told IANS that Pakistani troops fired rockets around 2 p.m. at the post in Sabzian sector, about 230 km north of Jammu.

However, the Indian side did not retaliate.

The Pakistani Army had also fired rockets and opened machine gun fire in this sector last week.
