Islamabad, Dec 10 (IANS) Faction and sub-factions within militant forces are battling each other and opening up “new threats and new risks of even greater violence”, said a Pakistani daily Monday.
An editorial in the News International said it was a fallacy to think of the militant forces who command the north of Pakistan as a homogenous force.
“Of late, it is becoming clearer that they are in fact divided into factions and sub-factions, some quite bitterly opposed to each other. This opens up new threats and new risks of even greater violence as a result of infighting,” it said.
The daily cited the example of the narrow escape of Mullah Nazir, a powerful militant commander, who faced an assassination bid by a suicide bomber in South Waziristan.
Nazir, closely linked to the North Waziristan Gul Bahadur group and also the Haqqani network, believes the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), commanded by Hakimullah Mehsud was responsible for the attack.
“Tribal tensions are also involved…Similar differences are thought to have led to the attack, apparently by the TTP, on a convoy of former Jamaat-e-Islami leader, Qazi Hussain Ahmed, in the Mohmand Agency,” said the editorial.
The daily said that right now “the divides we are seeing opens up more dangers, and it is important that as a nation we recognise that all militant forces are essentially dangerous, and threaten to add further dimensions of violence to the country”.
“But it must be explored whether these divisions in militant ranks open up any window of opportunity for our security establishment for talks to negotiate peace and make allies. With the violence in Balochistan and Karachi; an economy that is hardly stable; and threats of terrorist attacks already a reality, Pakistan cannot afford more chaos as a result of differences within these militant groups,” it added.

Islamabad, Dec 9 (IANS) Islamabad Saturday dismissed Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s allegation that the assassination bid on Afghan intelligence chief was planned in Pakistan’s Quetta city, Xinhua reported.
Assadullah Khalid, head of Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security (NDS) and a confidant of Karzai, was injured in Thursday’s attack in a guest house of the spy agency in Kabul.
Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in revenge for the recent execution of several Taliban prisoners, saying the attacker posed as a peace messenger.
On Saturday, Karzai, however, ruled out the possibility of Taliban’s involvement in the attack, saying it was impossible for Taliban to carry out what he described as a “complicated attack”.
He alleged that the attack was planned by Pakistan-based militants and called for investigation to ascertain the attackers.
Pakistan, however, asked Kabul to share intelligence with Pakistan instead of levelling charges.
“Before levelling charges the Afghan government would do well if they shared information or evidence with the government of Pakistan that they might have with regard to the cowardly attack on the head of NDS.
“They would also do well by ordering an investigation into any lapses in the security arrangements around the NDS chief,” Pakistan’s foreign ministry said.

Islamabad, Dec 7 (IANS) Pakistan has asked the US to find alternatives to drone strikes for the purpose of eliminating terrorists.
Pakistan Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, during a meeting with US Ambassador Richard Olson Thursday, briefed him on how counter-productive the drone ofensive was. He told the US envoy that “alternative means to eliminate terrorists” needed to be found out, Dawn reported.
The courtesy call turned out to be Olson’s tryst with protests over drone attacks because of the early morning US strike on a militant hideout in North Waziristan that left four people dead, the report added.
Pakistan and the US have long been negotiating what is often referred to as “mutually acceptable solution” to drone attacks.
The US views drones as a crucial weapon in its war against terrorists.
