Anna, Ramdev join hands, to hold fast June 3

Gurgaon, April 20 (IANS) Anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare and yoga guru Baba Ramdev will jointly sit on a day’s token fast in Delhi June 3 to press for a strong Lokpal bill and to mobilise opinion against black money.

Addressing a joint press conference here, Hazare and Ramdev slammed the government for being involved in corruption.
Hazare said they had no intention of making the government fall. However, there was nothing wrong if the people’s movement proceeded that way.
“Making the government fall is not our intention… if this government is graduate in corruption, the next government will do PhD… But a government that can’t understand people’s voice, it’s not a (matter of) concern if it falls,” Hazare said.
Ramdev added that the present government had no right to rule.
“It can only happen in India that after so many corruption cases the government continues.”
“Time will change and a government will come that will have only those who want a strong Lokpal,” Ramdev said.
The two added that they would travel across the country and campaign against corruption.

India’s first RFID technology toll comes up near Chandigarh

Chandimandir (Haryana), April 19 (IANS) India’s first RFID (radio frequency identification) -based electronic toll plaza was inaugurated on National Highway No.5 (NH-5) at Chandimandir in Haryana’s Panchkula district.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister C.P. Joshi inaugurated the new toll plaza in the presence of union Culture Minister Selja, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his Haryana counterpart Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

The new toll plaza is on the Zirakpur-Parwanoo section of the NH-5, 20 km from Chandigarh.

Constructed by Himalayan Expressway Ltd, a subsidiary of construction, cement and power sector company Jaypee Group, the toll plaza will have all 14 lanes using the RFID technology for electronic toll collection.

Addressing the gathering, Joshi said that though the section of the highway (where the new toll is located) is only about 27.6 km on a four-laned road, it is unique as its passes through three states, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, in this short distance. The project runs 21 km in Haryana, 4.6 km in Himachal Pradesh and two km in Punjab.

He said RFID technology would soon be implemented all over the country to provide seamless travel to long journey road users and save their time and fuel.

Project concessionaire Jaypee Group executive chairman Manoj Gaur said that with the commissioning of the project, the nightmare of road users (on the Delhi-Chandigarh-Shimla section) travelling through unanticipated traffic jams will vanish. He said there will be saving of travel time and fuel cost.

Gaur said that special emphasis has been laid on landscaping and safety of the road users.

‘This will be a new gateway to Himachal Pradesh. By employing our rich experience of hydropower projects, high retaining walls have been built and rock fall protection measures have been adopted,’ he said.

Gurgaon Girlcott ends, malls say it had no impact

Gurgaon, April 15 (IANS) Gurgaon Girlcott – a movement to urge women in this millenium city on Delhi’s outskirts to keep away from splurging at restaurants, malls and salons to protest against rising crimes against the female sex, ended Sunday with some mall managers claiming that the protest had little impact while the campaigners maintained that it was a success.

Richa Dube, one of the campaigners, told IANS that many people didn’t open their purses as a mark of support for the Gurgaon Girlcott.
According to her estimates, last weekend people spent about Rs.40,000 on shopping but this weekend there were some who didn’t even buy a litre of milk.
She said they came across people like Dhruv Arora, a resident of Gurgaon, who wanted to pick up important equipment but put off his plan to next week in support the women’s movement.
Dhruv Swamini, a basketball professional, didn’t purchase a stop watch for her practice session, claimed Dube.
Mall managers said they too were sympathetic towards women’s safety but claimed the campaign had negligible impact.
Sandeep Dutta, manager of Ambiance Mall here, told IANS: “We support the voice of women and crime against them must be checked at any cost. But Gurgaon Girlcott had no impact at all. On Saturday, more than one lakh footfalls were recorded at the mall, as normal. On Sunday, the figure went up further.”
MGF Metropolitan Mall Manager Denise Singh too claimed that the girlcott did not have any impact. Visitors came in as usual and sales were not affected. She supported the protesters’ cause and said that atrocities against women were not tolerable.
Dube said their campaign was supported by other groups like Jagori, Indian Institute for Human Settlements, Institute of Urban Designers (India) and various other groups like the Asmita Theatre Group and ‘Let’s Walk Gurgaon’.
A meeting of all the groups would be called next week to review the situation and strengthen the movement, she said.
She said 60 volunteers had registered themselves for the campaign.
Dube said harming the business of private firms was not their target, but they wanted to show that women can do much more than what people thought.
The movement, born as an idea on the popular social networking platform Facebook, targets a favourite weekend activity – shopping and splurging by women. The Girlcott had urged women to hold their purse strings tight during April 13-15, and stay away from shopping in malls, stores, salons, restaurants, or taking cabs – basically anywhere that requires them to spend money in Gurgaon.
The idea was planted after a 25-year-old woman was abducted and gangraped in the city last month when she was returning from work at night. Following this, the Gurgaon administration remarked that women should not work after 8 p.m. – a statement they later retracted due to strong criticism.
