Dubai, April 16 (IANS) The International Cricket Council (ICC) has finally agreed to go for a constitutional amendment to spilt the role of the president by creating a new post of chairman who won’t have any voting rights.
During its executive board meeting, held here Sunday, the ICC decided to go for the split roles and now the amended Articles will now be placed before the ICC Annual Conference in Kuala Lumpur at the end of June for consideration and approval.
A resolution to split the roles was taken in the last meeting of the executive board and Sunday the directors confirmed the necessary amendments to the constitution to split the role of the ICC president and chairman of the board.
The role of the president will be reformed after the Annual Conference in 2014 to separate the chairman of the board position from that of the ICC president. Until then, the current roles for the ICC president and vice president will remain, after which the vice presidency will cease to exist and a new post of chairman of the board created.
The term of office for the new ceremonial role for the president will be one year and will rotate, as it currently does, among the members. The president will not be a voting member of the board.
The chairman, who will be appointed by the board for a maximum of six years — two terms of three years each — will also be non-voting.
Until the president’s role has been confirmed, the joint nomination of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the role of vice president 2012-14 was deferred until the amended Articles have been considered by ICC Annual Conference.
During the meeting, the nominations committee reported that they have arrived at a shortlist of four candidates who will be interviewed in due course to replace Haroon Lorgat, the current ICC chief executive, who vacates his position at the end of the Annual Conference in June 2012.
The ICC also discussed the Woolf Report, on independent governance review, and agreed that, in the first instance, there was a real need for further discussion among the directors and members in an effort to build consensus.
The ICC said that in agreeing the split to the president and chairman’s role and creating targeted funding for members in line with the Woolf recommendations, the directors were keen to begin discussion among themselves to develop a clearer understanding of the role of the world body.
‘Change in any form is challenging and it would be unrealistic to expect immediate decisions. This was the Board’s first opportunity to discuss the report and it is encouraging that there is a willingness to engage in difficult and significant governance matters,’ Lorgat said.

Dubai, April 16 (IANS) The International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to expand the 2014 World Twenty20 in Bangladesh from 12 teams to 16 to boost the associate members.
The associate members were unhappy after the ICC refused to increase the number of teams for this year’s World Twenty20 (T20I) in Sri Lanka despite their good performance in the 2011 World Cup.
The ICC during its executive board meeting here Sunday received a report of the strategic discussions held at the Chief Executive’s Committee (CEC) in March 2012 and confirmed that from 2014 onwards, the number of teams participating in the World Twenty20 will be increased from 12 to 16. The event should remain a joint men’s and women’s event.
The board also said that three additional Twenty20 Internationals may be played in the year in which the ICC World Twenty20 is being staged provided there is a corresponding reduction in the maximum number of permitted ODIs. As per ICC Scheduling guidelines, the current regulations permit a maximum of 12 T20Is for each full member in any one year.
‘The need to manage volume of cricket was considered when agreeing to allow the additional T20Is to be played in a year,’ ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said in a statement Monday.
The board also confirmed the hosting for the ICC World Twenty20 2014 qualifying tournament in the United Arab Emirates in October 2013 and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 qualifying event in New Zealand in 2014.
The ICC has already commenced with planning for its new rights cycle post 2015 and a key prerequisite of this is to determine the ICC events that will be staged.

Dubai, April 15 (IANS) The International Cricket Council (ICC) said Sunday that Bangladesh has agreed to tour Pakistan for a One-day International and one Twenty20 international at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
Bangladesh will be the first international team to tour Pakistan since it became a no-go zone following the attack by unknown gunmen on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore in 2009.
The ICC said that having due regard to its duty of care to match officials and other ICC staff, requested that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to immediately provide a comprehensive security plan for consideration.
The ICC’s Anti Corruption and Security Unit will now commission a local risk assessment agency to determine whether its officials and staff are appropriately protected by the proposed security plan, before any further decision is taken in relation to their appointment.
The ODI is scheduled for April 29 while the Twenty20 will be played one day later at the same venue.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Mustafa Kamal said: ‘The public of Pakistan have been deprived of cricket and we felt that we needed to support them. The reception we received when we toured Lahore and Karachi on our security visit was overwhelming.’
Zaka Ashraf, the PCB chairman, said: ‘I want to thank the BCB and the Bangladesh Government for their support for this tour.’
Ashraf and Kamal attended the ICC Executive Board meeting here, Sunday.

Dubai, April 14 (IANS/CMC) Veteran West Indies left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul is steadily making his way back to the top of world cricket, moving three spots to fifth in the latest International Cricket Council Test player rankings.
His rise comes on the heels of his unbeaten 103 in the opening Test against Australia at the Kensington Oval.
It was his 25th Test century, surpassing legendary captain Sir Vivian Richards (24) and moving to within one of the incomparable Sir Garry Sobers.
Chanderpaul is now also just 188 runs away from becoming the second West Indies batsman to reach 10,000 Test runs, behind the outstanding Brian Lara, who finished with 11,953 runs.
Meanwhile, the left-handed Darren Bravo, who scored 51 in the first innings and 32 in the second, has remained 21st in the rankings despite reaching a career-best ratings points of 695.
At the top, Australia captain Michael Clarke fell two places to allow South African AB de Villiers to take sole possession of the number one spot.
In the bowling rankings, captain and medium pacer Darren Sammy has jumped four places to 22nd, to become the highest ranked West Indies bowler after taking three wickets in consistent spells in the last Test.
South African speedster Dale Steyn leads an unchanged top five.
