When a Bangladeshi judge set an example

Dhaka, April 3 (IANS) A judge in Bangladesh refused to have his economy class seat in a Biman flight upgraded to a business class seat, saying the airline should not lose money from this service.

Bazlur Rahman, a high court judge, was flying to Singapore by Biman Bangladesh Airlines Tuesday. The crew offered him a business class seat, but the judge turned it down.
He told them that the government had arranged an economy class seat for him and that he was happy with it. Biman as a corporation should not lose money because of this extra service, the Daily Star reported.
The aircraft left only after the captain received confirmation from the ground staff
handling VIP passengers had offered him an upgraded seat which he refused.
This is in sharp contrast to an incident in October last year when a Biman flight to Singapore was delayed by about 30 minutes because of a row over upgrading an economy class seat of another judge.

Dipu Moni said she will visit India after Mukherjee’s tour.

Bangladesh to observe Earth Hour

Dhaka, March 29 (IANS) The Bangladeshi government has decided to observe Earth Hour 2012 and it will urge the people not to use power during that time, an official said Thursday.

‘We’ve decided to observe Earth Hour and ask the people not to use power during that hour,’ Xinhua quoted Towfiq-E-Elahi Chowdhury, Bangladeshi prime minister’s energy advisor as saying at a press briefing.

Earth Hour 2012 will be held March 31, 2012 from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. at the participating country’s local time.

The Bangladesh government could save about 400 tonnes of liquid fuel and 1.6 million units of electricity if all people in the country observe Earth Hour, said the country’s Power Development Board Chairman ASM Alamgir.

The country’s Power Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said they have started to campaign for it and hope that it would be observed across Bangladesh.

Earth Hour is a worldwide event that is organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and is held on the last Saturday of March annually, encouraging households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change.

The concept of Earth Hour was conceived by the World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature and the Sydney Morning Herald in 2007, when 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated by turning off all non-essential lights.

Following Sydney’s lead, many other cities around the world adopted the event in 2008.

Bangladesh celebrates 41st independence day

Dhaka, March 26 (IANS) Bangladesh celebrated its 41st independence day Monday with tributes to the martyred war heroes.

On March 26, 1971 valiant Bengalis of the then East Pakistan, on declaration of independence by Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, picked up arms to resist Pakistani occupation forces, who had unleashed a genocide on the people the night before, the Daily Star reported.
Victory was finally achieved Dec 16 following a nine-month-long struggle and Bangladesh was born.
On Monday, Bangladesh President Zillur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Opposition Leader Khaleda Zia laid wreaths at the National Monument at Savar, some 30 km north of capital Dhaka, at sunrise.
After laying wreaths, the president and prime Minister stood in solemn silence for a few moments paying their respects to the martyrs.
The bugle played the last post and contingents of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force presented state salute on the occasion, the Daily Star reported.
Hundreds of thousands of people thronged Liberation War memorials across the country to pay tribute to the martyred war heroes who fought for freedom of the people 41 years ago.
A feeling of resurgence of the spirit of the Liberation War permeated the whole country amid the jubilant celebration of the Independence Day.
A 31-gun salute at dawn heralded the day, which is also the national day of Bangladesh.
On this occasion, national flags were flown on the buildings of the government and private offices. It was a public holiday in the country.
The country’s president, prime minister and opposition leader greeted the people in separate messages on this occasion.

Bangladesh to protest against Cheema’s obstruction

Dhaka, March 25 (IANS) The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will lodge a complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) over the collision between Mahmudullah Riyad and Pakistan bowler Aizaz Cheema during the final of the Asia Cup that was won by Pakistan last week.

The incident took place during the first ball of the final over of Bangladesh innings when Cheema blocked Riyad, who was trying to take the second run after the ball had gone to third-man. It ended up as just a single leaving Bangladesh to score eight runs off five balls. Bangladesh lost by two runs.
“It is clearly written in the playing conditions that it will be a dead ball if the batsman faces an obstacle while running by a bowler or fielder. The batting side will get a five-run penalty,” BCB cricket operations chairman Enayet Hossain Siraj was quoted as saying by The Daily Star.
“In that case, we would have required only four runs off six balls. We have footage which clearly shows that the bowler in question created an obstacle to Riyad,” he added.
Umpire Steve Davis spoke with the two players after Riyad had protested immediately.

Pakistan beat Bangladesh to win Asia Cup

Mirpur (Dhaka), March 22 (IANS) Pakistan won the Asia Cup cricket tournament beating hosts Bangladesh by two runs in a thrilling final at the Shere Bangla National Stadium here Thursday.

Bangladesh suffered a heart break, despite being the best team in the tournament with wins against heavyweights India and Sri Lanka.
Chasing a target of 237, Bangladesh scored 34 for eight in 50 overs after half-centuries from former skipper Shakib-al-Hasan (68) and opening batsman Tamim Iqbal (60).
Pacer Aizaz Cheema was the pick of the Pakistani bowlers bagging three for 46 while spearhead Umar Gul (2-65) and Saeed Ajmal (2-40) picked two wickets each. Shahid Afridi bowled miserly conceeding just 28 runs and picking one wicket from his 10 overs.
Tamim gave Bangladesh a good start but his dismissal triggered a mini collapse as Bangladesh slumped from 68 for no loss to 81 for three in 23.1 overs. Tamim hit eight fours in his run-a-ball innings before mistiming a pull off Gul only to find Younis Khan at extra cover.
Shakib and Nasir Hossain (28) raised hope of a Bangladesh win with their 89-run stand for the fourth wicket but after they fell, the hosts lost way.
Earlier, Bangladesh bowled well to restrict Pakistan to 236 for nine in 50 overs. Opting to field, Bangladesh took wickets at regular intervals as the Pakistanis failed to stitch a good partnership.
Left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak was the pick of the bowlers giving away only 26 runs in his ten overs and taking two wickets. Mashrafe Mortaza and Shakib-al-Hasan also picked up two wickets each.
Pakistan opener Mohammad Hafeez (40) held one end but lost wickets around him. Umar Akmal (30) and Hammad Azam (30) put on a stand of 59 runs for the fifth wicket but fell in quick succession to again put the Pakistan team on the backfoot.
Pakistan would have been in deep trouble if it wasn’t for some late heroics by keeper Sarfraz Ahmed (46). Sarfraz smashed pacer Shahadat Hossain — who had a day to forget giving away 63 runs off nine overs — for 19 runs in the last over as Pakistan reached a fighting total.
Shahid Afridi (32) took on the Bangladeshi bowling but a wonderful running catch by Nasir Hossain off Shakib sent the mercurial batsman back to the hut.
Bangladesh put a spirited performance in the field and the slower bowlers had a field day, sharing five wickets between them. Shakib, a former captain, continued his good all-round performance in the tournament with figures of 2-39.
