Sammy defends under-performing Gayle after series loss

Dhaka, Dec 9 (IANS/CMC) Captain Darren Sammy was left defending under-performing opener Chris Gayle after the West Indies slid to a 2-3 defeat in the five-match One-Day International series against Bangladesh here.

The left-handed Gayle, one of the finest limited overs batsmen in the contemporary game, managed just 72 runs from five innings in the series as the Caribbean side’s batting struggled throughout.
Sammy contended, however, that the team’s performances did not centre around one player.
“I would like to see all my players perform. Things don’t always go the way you want them to. Obviously Chris is a very experienced player and I know he will come back good anytime,” Sammy told a media conference Saturday night.
“Credit to the Bangladesh team for the way they bowled at him throughout this series. They had a plan and they stuck to it. The team doesn’t revolve around one person, it’s a collective set of people to go out there and do what is necessary for us to win.”
He added: “I don’t blame people, I’ve always said that cricket is a team sport. We’ve got to pull together as a team. It’s not every day the same people will perform and today we got a performance from (Kieron) Pollard and (Darren) Bravo and Kemar (Roach) got five wickets. We just need more performances from the team and that would make us more successful.”
The West Indies entered the series with their batting as their strength but failed to live up to expectations. They were dismissed in the opening ODI in Khulna for 199 to lose by seven wickets and crashed for a paltry 132 in the second game, chasing 293 for victory.
Even when they chased a moderate 228 to win the third game, they needed Marlon Samuels’ century in order to triumph after the batting struggled again, and they mustered just 211 off 50 overs in the fourth game before their bowlers defended well.
Saturday, Pollard emerged from poor form to slam a stroke-filled 85 while Bravo, perhaps the most consistent batsman in the series, scored 51.
The pair added 132 for the fourth wicket to repair the innings after the Windies had slumped to 17 for three.
“The difference between the two teams is that we lost. We have not played our best cricket but we still put ourselves in a position to win the series,” Sammy pointed out.

India to adopt liberal visa policy with Bangladesh

Dhaka, Dec 3 (IANS) India would adopt a liberal visa policy to boost economic partnership and encourage Indian business to invest in Bangladesh to address the imbalance in trade and reap mutual benefit.

“As a step towards showing India’s commitment to joining hands with Dhaka in giving a boost to the economic prosperity of Bangladesh and its people, we have decided to adopt a liberal visa regime,” High Commissioner Pankaj Saran said at the start of the India Show here.
India is attaching greater importance to its ties with Bangladesh as a strategically and economically key element in the furtherance of its “Look East” policy.
It also believes Bangladesh can become a hub for its Northeast region. India intends to help develop ports, waterways and alternate roadways to boost trade and investment.
There is no formal agreement between India and Bangladesh on the visa regime.
“Earlier, businessmen and other categories would get five days’ visa with single-entry condition. This was making it very difficult for even those people who have been dealing with the Indian corporate world for the last two to three decades.
“Now we are granting six-month multi-entry visa and even longer term visas to various categories including artists from Bangladesh that is going to make things smooth and easy,” Saran added.
Bangladesh is seeking more Indian investment in the country.
“We have an open business-environment in the county and Indian businessmen are welcome to invest in any kind of establishment they want to,” Bangladesh Commerce Minister Ghulam Muhammed Quader said, inaugurating the Show.
Bangladesh’s liberal investment policy allows equal treatment for local and foreign investors, legal protection against nationalisation and expropriation, guarantee of repatriation of capital and dividend, corporate tax holidays up to seven years, concessionary duty on the import of machinery, export incentives, allowing 100 percent equity, and unrestricted exit policy.
India’s Commerce Secretary S.R. Rao said the balance of trade in favour of India could be addressed by investing in Bangladesh.
Indian companies can also have access to western markets like EU and the US where Bangladesh enjoys zero duty especially for textiles.
Deputy High Commissioner Sandeep Chakravorty said Indian companies may look for collaboration in power generation, IT and tyre manufacturing.
“Indian investment is suitable for Bangladesh. Indian entrepreneurs understand Bangladesh’s business climate. Bangladesh’s export to India won’t rise unless the Indian investors come here,” he said.
Bangladesh had been demanding since long increased market access for its products to India.
Rao said he hoped that business people in the two countries would fully utilise the duty and quota-free access facility.
India slashed its sensitive list under the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) for less developed countries and granted duty-free access to Bangladesh especially for textiles.
The two-way trade stood at $4.3 billion in 2011-12. India sold goods worth over $3.5 billion to Bangladesh whose exports were worth around $0.6 billion.
Chakravorty said export diversification and investment by Indian companies to produce products here and re-export those to Indian market could help Bangladesh boost its export volume to India.
Bangladesh and India will have secretary-level talks Tuesday. Various trade-related issues will come up for discussions at the meeting.
Bangladesh commerce joint secretary Shawkat Ali Wareshi said since Bangladesh’s export basket is fragile, the India Show would be an opportunity for entrepreneurs to know what type of products India wants and it will help them diversify their products to boost exports to India.
The India Show has been organised by the commerce ministry, India Brand Equity Foundation and FICCI to explore joint venture possibilities and cooperation to boost trade and investment between the two countries.

Climate change to displace over 95 mn Bangladeshis

Dhaka, Nov 29 (IANS) Climate change in Bangladesh will force the displacement of over 95 million people by 2040, says a new report by a local think tank.

The report titled “The Tempest of Exodus: The Case of Climate Change−induced Displacement in Bangladesh and International Negotiations” has been prepared by think tank Unnayan Onneshan, Xinhua reported.
The study said flood may displace 5.25 million by 2020, 11.02 million by 2030, and 23.16 million people by 2040 based upon the historical trend.
Likewise, if radical actions are not taken, 1.58 million may be displaced due to cyclone by 2020, 6.46 million by 2030 and 26.39 million people by 2040.
In addition, riverbank erosion could displace 11.62 million by 2020, 26.15 million by 2030 and 40.67 million by 2040. Drought may also lead to the exodus of 3.92 million, 4.64 million and 5.5 million people by 2020, 2030 and 2040.
Taking into account all these situations, the research group estimated that climate change−induced migration in Bangladesh may reach 22.37 million, 48.28 million and 95.72 million by 2020, 2030 and 2040.
The Unnayan Onneshan said that on an average, 2.5 million people are displaced permanently by every major flood.
A new World Bank report published Nov 18 said the sea level would rise by up to three feet in Bangladesh where water scarcity and falling crop yield exacerbate hunger and poverty.

It also said some of the most highly vulnerable cities are located in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Mozambique, Madagascar, Mexico and Venezuela.

Bangladesh mourns factory fire victims

Dhaka, Nov 27 (IANS) National flags across Bangladesh flew at half−mast Tuesday as the country observed a national mourning day for over 100 people who lost their lives in a devastating fire at a garment factory and in a flyover collapse.

Flags were flown at half−mast at offices of all government, semi−government and autonomous and academic institutions as well as in other important buildings, Xinhua reported.
The fire at the factory in Ashulia on the outskirts of Dhaka claimed at least 111 lives and 12 others perished in the flyover collapse in the southeastern port city of Chittagong, according to official figures.
The government also declared a day off at all ready−made garment factories across the country Tuesday.
The decisions were taken at a weekly cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Special prayers were offered Tuesday at mosques, temples, pagodas, churches and other places of worship.
Thousands of garment workers in Dhaka and other places in the country took part in mourning processions, demanding punishment to the owners of the garments factory where the tragedy occurred.
Officials said samples were collected from the severely burnt bodies for DNA tests so as to identify them.
The unidentified bodies will be buried at a graveyard in Dhaka by Anjuman−e−Mofidul Islam, a charity arranging funerals for unidentified deceased.
Hasina Monday night said the fire at Tazreen Fashions Ltd. was set in a planned way.
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers’ and Exporters’ Association also spoke about plots to set the factory ablaze in an attempt to create anarchy.
Some workers who escaped by jumping from windows said factory authorities had barred them from running to safety after the fire alarm went off.
Some survivors said they found two of the three staircases leading to the ground floor were locked.
Prime Minister Hasina said police captured a woman trying to set a factory ablaze at Ashulia.
Sumi Begum was paid 20,000 taka (about $250) for torching a building.
The man who paid her has been arrested, Hasina said.
“It is not an accident, (it was) planned. The incident takes place when it is the time for (global) buyers to come and sign contracts,” she said.
Bangladesh has about 4,000 garment factories which employ approximately three million people, 80 percent of whom are women.
In the last fiscal year (July 2011−June 2012), Bangladesh earned about $20 billion from exports of garments.
