Three held in Denmark on terror charges

Copenhagen, April 27 (IANS) Three people – including a Jordanian and a Turk – were arrested in the Danish capital Friday on suspicion of preparing for a terrorist act, officials said.

Danish security and intelligence service PET said the arrests took place at two locations in Copenhagen, and several searches are being conducted in the city, Xinhua reported.
The suspects have been identified as a 22-year-old Jordanian, a 23-year-old Turkish citizen and a 21-year-old Danish citizen.
The three men have been charged with illegal possession of automatic weapons and ammunition. The PET suspects they were preparing for a terrorist act.

City dwellers face double risk of heart disease

Copenhagen, April 27 (IANS) People residing in city centres are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery calcification (CAC), which can lead to heart disease, than those who live in less polluted urban or rural areas, according to a study.

CAC is the accumulation of calcium deposits in arteries.

Researchers, led by Jess Lambrechtsen, cardiologist at Svendborg Hospital in Denmark, spoke to 1,225 men and women aged 50 to 60 years, including 251 who lived in the centres of major Danish cities.

Despite the fact that none of the participants showed any symptoms of heart disease, 43 percent of the total had CAC, the Journal of Internal Medicine reports.

The study also found that people who lived in city centres were 80 percent more likely to develop CAC than those living in other areas and that males, older participants, diabetics and smokers also faced higher risks, according to a Svendborg statement.

“Our study aimed to evaluate the association between living in a city centre, which is often used by researchers to indicate exposure to air pollution, and the presence of coronary artery calcification in men and women showing no other symptoms of heart disease,” explains Lambrechtsen.

The participants were selected at random from a national government database of Danish adults, and 69 percent agreed to take part and attend one of four regional hospitals in Southern Denmark.

Three percent were excluded from the study because of previous heart problems, leaving 1,225 people who did not display any symptoms of heart disease. Of these, 47 percent were male and 53 percent were female and they were equally split between the 50 year-old and 60 year-old age groups.

Key findings included: CAC was more common in people living in city centres, rather than urban or rural areas – in men (69 percent vs 56 percent), women (42 percent vs 30 percent ), 50 year-olds (48 percent vs 32 percent) and 60 year-olds (61 percent vs 53 percent).

Euro 2012: Danish footballers banned from using social media

Copenhagen, April 25 (IANS) Denmark’s national football team has been banned from using Twitter and other social media sites during the upcoming European Championships 2012, the country’s governing body for the game has said.

“We have an agreement with players that they will not be active on social media sites during the European Championships,” Lars Berendt, communications head for the Danish Football Association (DFA), told TV2.
This means there will be no other contact between players and fans outside of official statements, and post-match press conferences and interviews, reports Xinhua.
“There is already so much communication during European Championship, that we must limit the time for meeting with the media,” Berendt said.
The DFA says the ban has actually been in place ever since online social media platforms emerged, and that the decision to forbid their use was done by Danish national football team coach Morten Olsen.
However, the ban sparked a controversy in Denmark, given that several Danish national players are avid social media users, and often update their fans via Twitter and Facebook.
Star forward Nicklas Bendtner, who plays for English club Sunderland, regularly writes about his life in England on his Twitter feed, which has 48,504 subscribers.
Bendtner and Danish national team goalkeeper Thomas Soerensen’s twitter accounts reveal they have previously written to fans via the micro-blogging site while part of the national team training camp, and before some international games.
But Berendt said Tuesday that no player has previously communicated via social media while on national team duty.
For his part, Bendtner told the TV channel Tuesday that “I do not agree, but do respect” the DFA’s decision, adding that social media was a personal communications channel for many national team players’ feelings and thoughts after matches.
Meanwhile, Danish culture minister Uffe Elbaek joined the debate, saying the DFA’s decision “tried to restrict popular freedom of expression.”
The Euro 2012 will be played in Poland and Ukraine from June 8 to July 1. Denmark are grouped with Germany, the Netherlands and Portugal.

Kerber beats Wozniacki to lift WTA Copenhagen title

Copenhagen, April 16 (IANS) Former World No.1, Caroline Wozniacki saw her winning streak at the Danish Open come to an end as Angelique Kerber of Germany downed the Dane 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the title here.

Wozniacki had previously won the $220,000 indoor hardcourt tournament in 2010 and 2011, but Kerber brought that winning streak to a halt through her sharply-angled returns and clean forehand smashes, despite committing a number of unforced errors Sunday.
“I am very glad to win my second (WTA) title. Caroline is a great player, it was a tough match, and I showed all my skills here today,” Kerber was quoted as saying by Xinhua.
The contest was closely fought from the start, but it was 24-year-old Kerber, ranked 15, who quickly went up 2-1 in the first set, and put pressure on the 21-year-old Wozniacki, ranked sixth.
Wozniacki looked rattled and seemed to lose both concentration and rhythm, as Kerber pulled ahead 1-0 in the second set. The match stopped briefly after Wozniacki slipped and hurt her ankle while returning a volley, but she resumed with a bandaged foot and ankle.
The pause helped Wozniacki rally her game, and she pulled ahead 4-1 in the second set, through some expert volleys and placement that sent Kerber racing around the centre court.
But Kerber proved resilient, winning a series of break points and five straight games, to wrap up the second set 6-4.
“I knew before the match that I had to give it 100 percent, and I did, and it was a good match played at a high level,” said Kerber.
The victory brought Kerber her second WTA title overall. It is especially sweet for the German player who previously lost to Wozniacki in the quarter-finals here last year.
This year’s defeat was a deep disappointment for Wozniacki who had cruised through the main draw, winning all her matches in straight sets.
Sunday’s other final match saw Kimiko Date-Krumm and Rika Fujiwara of Japan beat Sweden’s Sofia Arvidsson and Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi 6-2, 4-6, (10-5) to lift the doubles title.

Wozniacki reaches Copenhagen WTA semi-finals

Copenhagen, April 14 (IANS) Former World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki advanced to the semi-finals of the Copenhagen WTA tournament after beating Alice Cornet of France 6-0, 6-3 in the quarter-finals.

Top-seed Wozniacki showed her class as she hardly gave Cornet a chance to get a foothold in the match held at the Farum Arena here Friday.
The first set was over in 26 minutes and things did not change much in the second set. However, Cornet challenged the current number six in the world in several well played duels but could not prevent the Dane from winning 6-3.
It was a little more difficult for third seeded Jelana Jancovic of Serbia in her match against Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi. Jankovic lost the first set 4-6 but came back and won the next two sets 6-1, 6-3, Xinhua reported.
No. 2 seed Angelique Kerber of Germany had even greater difficulties in the fight against her compatriot Mona Barthel. After winning the first set 6-2, Kerber lost the second set 0-6, but fought her way back in the third set to win 7-5.
Wozniacki will now meet Petra Martic in the semi-final after the Croatian beat Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia 6- 4, 4-6, 6-3.

12 hostages rescued from Somali pirates

Copenhagen, April 13 (IANS) A Danish warship apprehended a pirate ship off Somalia’s coast and released 12 hostages, including a few Pakistanis, held on board, Denmark’s navy said Thursday.

The warship Absalon, part of NATO-led anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden, stopped the pirate ship Wednesday. A total of 16 suspected pirates were arrested and are now on board the warship, Xinhua cited the navy as saying in a statement.
The 12 hostages, said to be from Iran and Pakistan, who were held on the pirate ship for over a month, were released from captivity. They are now sailing home, the statement said.
No shots were fired during the operation and no casualties were reported, the navy said.
Danish authorities are now examining whether the suspected pirates can be prosecuted.
According to Danish broadcaster TV2, the country’s warships have captured a total of 280 pirates off Somalia’s coast. But only 37 have been prosecuted, with the rest set free.
