Bhopal, Jan 3 – An alert was sounded in Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh after a leopard caught in a trap laid by poachers managed to escape, forest officials said Sunday.
The leopard was caught in the trap in the jungles of Kannod near Panasi village in the district, 150 kms from here, they said.
However, some villagers spotted the feline struggling to free itself and informed forest authorities.
A rescue team was summoned from Indore as it was not possible to free the wild animal from the trap without tranquilising it. However, before the team could shoot the tranquilizing darts at the leopard, the animal managed to escape into the dense forest, the officials said.
‘Two days have passed but the animal is still untraceable. We have sounded an alert and have asked the villagers not to venture alone in isolated areas,’ Dewas Conservator of Forests Sanjay Shukla said.
Kannod forest is home to several wild animals including barking deer and sambhar, besides a few leopards.

Bhopal, Jan 1 – Indefinite curfew was imposed in Maksi town in Madhya Pradesh’s Shajapur district Friday evening, after one man was killed and six injured when a clash over a cricket match turned violent, police said.
The quarrel started in the afternoon over a small dispute when two teams of children were playing cricket in Maksi town, about 100 km from Bhopal. It soon transformed into a free for all and more people gathered on either side and used sticks and sharp-edged weapons as well as stones to attack each other. Later, guns were also pulled out and one person was killed in the firing.
‘Half a dozen people were injured during the clash and at least, one person was killed. He was rushed to Ujjain district hospital where he died while undergoing treatment. The administration first imposed Section 144 (of the Criminal Procedure Code) – prohibiting gathering of more than four people at a public place and then seeing the situation going out of control, clamped indefinite curfew on the entire town,’ Shajapur District Collector R.K. Sharma told IANS.
The six injured are undergoing treatment at Shajapur district hospital while additional police force has been rushed to Maksi, where the situation is said to be tense but under control, police said.

Bhopal, Jan 1 – The Congress Friday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Madhya Pradesh government of proposing to promote ‘incompetent and ineligible’ officers from the state services to the Indian Administrative Services (IAS).
The party also urged the central government not to accept the list of officers proposed by the state government.
‘While competent and honest officers have been neglected, ineligible and favourite officers are being promoted by the powers that be for personal gains,’ Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) spokesman K.K. Mishra told IANS.
‘If the existing list of corrupt and incompetent officers was not cancelled forthwith, the MPCC would approach the Madhya Pradesh High Court through a Public Interest Litigation and get justice done to the aggrieved hard working officers who have been overlooked despite having unblemished service records,’ he added.
Mishra asserted: ‘There has been transaction of huge money amounting to Rs.3-5 crore (Rs.30-50 million) to get the names of corrupt and incompetent cronies’ names included in the final list for approval of IAS cadre by the Union Public Services Commission (UPSC).’
The Congress leader alleged that Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and five of his ministerial colleagues — Finance Minister Raghavji, Commerce & Industries Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, Jail Minister Jagdish Devda, Water Resources Minister Jayant Malaiya and Women & Child Development Minister Ranjana Baghelwere — were directly involved in violating the set norms of selection for IAS cadre.

Bhopal, Dec 30 – A fake drug unit was busted in Bhopal and its owner arrested, police said Wednesday.
Acting on a tip-off, police raided a house in the outskirts of the city late Tuesday and unearthed a medicine manufacturing unit where a syrup was being made on a large scale, without permission or proper documents.
‘The owner of the unit Anil Agarwal has been charged and booked for fraud. Some workers who were bottling the same liquid using wrappers of different medicine companies have also been arrested,’ senior police official R.S. Misra told IANS.
‘Initially, Agarwal told the police that he had the licence of Secunderabad-based Angel Healthcare Company but he was taken into custody as he was not able to produce any documents in this regard. Subsequently, the police seized over 1,000 bottles of health tonics of different companies in which the same liquid was being filled,’ Misra added.
‘Besides, over 10,000 empty bottles of 200 ml size and hundreds of wrappers were also recovered,’ he said.
Station House Officer (SHO) G.L. Ahirwal said a single machine was installed inside the house and the syrup ‘Anfer 12′ was being packed in different bottles that bore separate names.
Police said the syrup’s samples would be tested to ascertain whether it contains any medicine or was a mere concoction that could adversely affect the health of patients. Police were also investigating whether more drugs were being manufactured in the unit. The names of suppliers who were getting the syrup from the unit were being ascertained.
The raid was jointly conducted by the officials of Controller, Food and Drugs Administration and the city police.
