Bhopal, March 22 (IANS) All the five nominees for Rajya Sabha seats from Madhya Pradesh were elected unopposed Thursday. These include four from the state’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and one from the Congress.
Among the four BJP nominees who have won is cash-for-vote accused Faggan Singh Kulaste.
Kulaste, then MP from Mandla constituency, had along with his party colleagues Ashok Argal and Mahaveer Bhagora waved currency notes inside parliament in July 2008 during a no-confidence motion after the Left parties withdrew support to the Manmohan Singh government on the Indo-US nuclear deal.
However, he lost his seat in the 2009 general elections. He had also been jailed in the cash-for-vote scam.
Along with Kulaste, Rajya Sabha’s former vice-chairman Najma Heptullah, Captan Singh Solanki and Thawar Chand Gehlot were elected from the BJP, while Congress’s Satyavrat Chaturvedi also got elected to the upper house.

Bhopal, March 21 (IANS) A controversial Madhya Pradesh minister made a bizarre statement in the state assembly Wednesday, asserting that promises made in election manifestos are by a party and not the government and hence, there was no need for a government to implement them.
State Cooperatives Minister Gauri Shankar Bisen’s statement was in response to a question by Congress legislator Arif Aqueel on the issue of loan waiver. Aqueel asked as to when loans up to Rs.50,000 to small farmers would be waived off as promised by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in its election manifesto.
To this, Bisen replied that it was a matter of the party and added that since he represented the government, he could not answer it.
However, speaker Ishawardas Rohahi made it clear to Bisen that it is the party which fights elections and not the government.
But after hearing the minister’s reply, the opposition Congress walked out of the assembly and said the BJP-led government was anti-farmer.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s cabinet minister Bisen has been in the news on several occasions but for all the wrong reasons. Recently, he had got his shoe-lace tied by a minor tribal boy during a public function in Chhindwara, which was widely criticized.

Bhopal, March 21 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janata Party may have found fault with the Planning Commission for reporting a substantial fall in the number of poor in the country, but its own government in Madhya Pradesh is using the panel’s data to claim success in reducing poverty substantially in the state.
The Shivraj Singh Chouhan government Wednesday said Madhya Pradesh has registered a significant 12 percent fall in five years from 2004-05 to 2009-10 against the national average of 7.3 percent fall in poverty.
The BJP government is also using the Commission report as a political weapon against the Congress.
“During the period from 1999-2000 to 2004-05 Madhya Pradesh was the only state where poverty had increased by 4 percent. In those five years, poverty had increased from 44.6 percent to 48.6 percent,” the state government said, referring to the reign of the then chief minister, Digvijay Singh.
“In contrast to this, the state posted a decrease in poverty from 48.6 percent to 36.7 percent during the period from year 2004-05 to year 2009-10,” it added on the basis of the Commission report.
The BJP government attributed the decline in poverty to augmentation of irrigation facilities, increase in agricultural productivity, 24-hour power supply to the industries, efficient implementation of rural development schemes including Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), and prudent fiscal management.
According to the figures of Commission, as many as 13 lakh families have moved above the poverty line in five years from 2004-05 to 2009-10. The Commission also estimates that poverty reduction in rural and urban areas was almost equal in Madhya Pradesh.

Gurjar, who was later arrested by Morena police, however, pleaded innocence before the court, saying the incident in which IPS officer got killed was an accident and not pre-planned murder.
Kumar’s father, Keshav Dev, had alleged that his son was murdered as he was taking tough action against illegal mining mafias.
The CBI had taken up the case March 15.
