Beijing, Feb 6 (IANS) The number of visitors to the famous Shaolin temple in Henan province, home to Shaolin Kung Fu martial arts, recorded a sharp decline during the weeklong spring festival celebrated in the last week of January.
The number of visitors to the Shaolin temple during the spring festival came down by about 42 percent compared to same period last year, the China Daily reported citing Dahe daily.
The popularity of the tourist attraction in Henan province over the holiday period declined apparently after it was warned against its poor service and maintenance.
The scenic spot received some 61,000 people during the festival.
A national committee of tourist spots expects the temple to complete an overhaul by the end of March 2012, failing which it will lose its top rating.
Founded in the 5th century, the Shaolin monastery is famous for its association with Chinese martial arts and particularly with Shaolin Kung Fu.

Beijing, Feb 6 (IANS) China Monday asked the US to abandon its “Cold War mentality” and cease making groundless accusations against Beijing, a foreign ministry spokesperson said.
Spokesperson Liu Weimin made the remark when commenting on an annual national security threat assessment report delivered by the US government, reported Xinhua.
The report stated that China has invaded American computer networks on a large scale, stolen intellectual property and conducted economic espionage. The report also named Chinese intelligence agencies as the biggest threat to the US in relevant fields for the next few years.
Liu said the accusations are “totally fictitious” and were made with an ulterior motive in mind.
Cyberattacks are transnational and anonymous, Liu said, adding that it is “unprofessional and irresponsible” to deduce the source of an attack without a thorough investigation.
The spokesperson said China has repeatedly declared its stance on issues regarding Internet security. China is willing to continue cooperation with the international community on safeguarding Internet security, he added.

Beijing, Feb 6 (IANS) China’s airlines are not allowed to pay a charge on carbon emissions imposed by the European Union (EU) nor are they allowed to hike freight or add other fees without government permission, authorities said Monday.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) said in a statement that it had been authorized by the State Council, China’s Cabinet to notify the ban to all domestic airlines, reported Xinhua.
The statement said the EU’s decision to charge flights into and out of EU airports for carbon emission “runs contrary to relevant principles of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the international civil aviation regulations”.
The EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme, which took effect Jan 1, is one of the widest-reaching measures adopted by any country or regional bloc to regulate emissions of greenhouse gases blamed for climate change. It is estimated that around 4,000 airlines will pay the EU for their carbon emissions.
“China objects to the EU’s decision to impose the scheme on non-EU airlines, and has expressed its concerns over the scheme through various channels,” the statement said.
“China will consider adopting necessary measures to protect interests of Chinese individuals and companies, pending the development of the issue,” the statement said.
It added that China hopes the EU can find proper solutions to the issue with considerations of the overall bilateral relations, the two sides’ combined efforts to combat climate change as well as the sustainable development of the international airline industry.
