Pakistan has 700,000 new tax-payers

Islamabad, Feb 1 (IANS) Pakistan has 700,000 new tax-payers Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said, adding that the government was taking steps to improve the state of the economy.

He was responding to queries from callers in a live “Prime Minister Online” television programme, Associated Press of Pakistan reported.
The annual report of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), highlighting the country’s disappointing economic situation, says the contributory factors to “this grim state of affairs include the collapse of fixed investments, acute energy shortage, urban violence and lawlessness, poor physical infrastructure and institutional fragility”.
The report says Pakistan’s GDP growth is likely to settle in the range of 3-4 percent by the June 30 end of fiscal 2011-12.
