No ‘huge deficit’ in Ganges flow

New Delhi, Sep 5 (IANS) There is no significant trend of ‘huge deficit’ in the water flows of the Ganges, Indus and Brahmaputra rivers, the Rajya Sabha was told Monday.

‘The flows in rivers are primarily dependent on the rainfall in the catchment areas. Studies do not indicate trend of huge deficit’ for these rivers, Minister of State for Water Resources Vincent H. Pala said.

He added that Strategic Foresight Group, a think tank, had said that in the next 20 years, India, Nepal, China and Bangladesh will face depletion of almost 275 billion cubic meters of annual renewable water.
