Mumbai, Dec 12 (IANS) The remake rights of “Jatt & Juliet”, the biggest hit in Punjabi cinema of all times, has been secured by producers Himesh Reshammiya and Rakesh Upadhyay — the team that has just released the comic romp “Khiladi 786″.
It, therefore, comes as no surprise to hear that Akshay Kumar is likely to play the lead in the Hindi adaptation of the film.
The all-time blockbuster of a Punjabi romance starred Diljit Dosanjh and Neeru Bajwa as a rustic Punjabi and a sophisticated fashion designer who keep bumping into one another in Canada.
The Punjabi film has been itching for a Bollywood interpretation. We now hear that following “Khiladi 786″, Reshammiya and Upadhyay have joined hands to do “Jatt & Juliet” in Hindi.
The Hindi remake would be directed by Anurag Singh, who directed the Punjabi smash hit.
Upadhyay, while admitting that the “Jatt & Juliet” remake would start early next year, refrains from commenting on the cast.
“At the moment, I wouldn’t like to comment on the cast. But yes, Himesh and I are going ahead with two projects. One of them is a thriller and the other is the remake of ‘Jatt & Juliet’. The Punjabi film was also produced by Himesh and me. We’ll do the remake on a much more lavish scale. But the basic plot of ‘Jatt & Juliet’ is so endearing it needs no embellishment in Hindi.”
Press him about Akshay Kumar’s presence in the remake, and Upadhyay laughs: “We’ve just delivered a film that has been immensely liked. So Himesh, Akshay and I would definitely not like to break the team. Like I said, until all the formalities are completed it would be unwise to talk about the casting.”
Reshammiya and Upadhyay intend to continue producing films together.
“After Khiladi 786, Himesh has 10 hardbound scripts ready. We’re both workaholics. We’ll continue to collaborate on mass-entertainment films. We want to make the kind of films that make people smile and laugh.”

Mumbai, Dec 12 (IANS) Actor Anil Kapoor, who is bringing the Indian adaptation of award-winning American TV series “24″ to the small screen, hopes his attempt bridges the gap between TV and films in the country.
Anil wants to bring in the same level of efficiency in the Indian version of “24″ as the original.
“But is that possible? I wonder,” says Anil.
“I had the privilege of observing the original team at work for eight months in Los Angeles. So I know what level of professionalism I need to exercise on ’24′. Working on the original ’24′ was a great learning curve for me. I absorbed as much as I could.
“Now I want to replicate whatever I saw them trying to achieve. The television industry in our country is still in its infancy. In the US, there are top actors who do television. Look at Keifer Sutherland or Ashton Kutcher.
“In India, television stars don’t get the same recognition and money as movie stars. Hopefully after my show, the gap between Indian television and Bollywood would be bridged,” he added.
“24″ is an American television series that started in 2001 and ran till 2010, with a total of 192 episodes.
Anil featured in the eighth season of the show as Omar Hassan, president of the fictional Islamic Republic of Kamistan.
Anil will start shooting for the Indian version in 2013.
“I’ve set aside all my other work for 24. But it’s not a big sacrifice. I am giving it a year. That’s the time an average feature film takes. I’ve already planned my films after the first season of ’24′. But for now, I’m fully into ’24′.
“I had to be all there with the team more for myself than for the team. Television is a new ballgame for me. The first season needs more careful nurturing. After the first season, the series would be on auto-pilot. We don’t know how many seasons we’ll do. Right now we’re focusing only on the first season,” he said.
While Anil plays the protagonist in the show, the casting of other roles has been left entirely upon the “24″ team.
“I know I am playing the protagonist. The rest of the cast, I’ve no idea of. And please, there’s no role for my daughter Sonam in ’24′. At the media meet I was asked if I’d cast her in the show. The next thing I know there’s talk of her being in ’24′. Blessedly I have a fine team.
“Everyone knows his or her job, Rensil d’Silva who heads the team of writers, had his own film ‘Unglee’ to write. But he never let that come in the way of his work on ’24′,” said Anil.

Chennai, Dec 12 (IANS) Superstar Rajinikanth, known for his unassuming attitude and charming aura, celebrated his 62nd birthday Wednesday with close friends and family at his residence here.
“Though early in the morning he stepped out on to his balcony to wave to his fans outside his house, he spent the rest of the day with his family and select friends from the industry,” a source from the industry told IANS.
Nevertheless, Rajinikanth fans had every reason to celebrate to the fullest. Members of a Rajinikanth fans association cut cakes and unfolded banners in different parts of the city to mark this special day.
“’12.12.12′ is a very special day and our superstar’s birthday falling on the same day makes it much more auspicious. This day comes only once in 100 years and, therefore, we wanted to make the best of it,” Sarathy, a member of Rajinikanth fans association, told IANS.
“We also performed puja in the temple, wishing our superstar health, happiness and prosperity,” he added.
Meanwhile, some members of the Tamil film industry also celebrated the actor’s birthday in style.
At the audio launch of a Tamil film titled “Payapulla”, a 63-kg cake was cut by Rajinikanth’s mentor, K. Balachander.
On the other hand, two books – “My Days with Baasha – The Rajinikanth Phenomenon” and “Rajinikanth – 12.12.12, A Birthday Special” were launched. The former is authored by veteran southern filmmaker Suresh Krissna, and the latter is published by The Hindu.
Rajinikanth’s “Sivaji 3D” also hit screens Wednesday. All the fifteen screens showing the 3D film across Chennai had sold-out shows. The film was released in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.

New Delhi, Dec 12 (IANS) Filmmaker Bejoy Nambiar has chosen to release the trailer of his next, “David”, online first. He feels he will be able to attract the movie’s target audience, the youth, in a better way through this route.
“David” is a story of three different Davids in three different time zones.
“Initially, the film’s trailer was to be released with ‘Khiladi 786′, which released last week, or with ‘Dabangg 2′, which is due to release on Dec 21. But Bejoy decided otherwise. He believes his core audience is the youth, which is more into the internet. The trailer can go viral that way,” said a source.
“Bejoy doesn’t want the trailer to appear in theatres first, even though it is the primary outlet for first looks and promos of a film. It can be in theatres only once it is online,” the source added.
“David” is an edgy film, and Nambiar of “Shaitan” fame wants to keep his marketing innovative for the project.
The first trailer of the film will go online Dec 14 via micro-blogging site Twitter.

Mumbai, Dec 12 (IANS) Actor Boman Irani believes that while writers are not given much importance in Bollywood, they are the ones who can actually lead the audiences into a theatre.
“In India, especially in our films, we don’t respect the writers, not in the credit titles or anywhere else… we don’t accept the size of their contribution. We believe that a writer eventually does not lead the audience into a theatre,” the 52-year-old said here Tuesday at the launch of author Sanjay Chopra’s book “Talespin”.
“But I feel that if writing is good and effective then the audiences will definitely come to the theatres,” he added.
Meanwhile, when asked if he believes in his hit film “3 Idiots” philosophy of running after efficiency and not success in context of the Rs.100 crore-club, Boman said: “I believe in the thought of ’3 Idiots’ but it would be wrong to say ‘running after Rs.100 crore’ because ’3 Idiots’ also raked in Rs.300 crore… the fact of the matter is this.”
“But if you forget the money equation and work towards excellence, then you will definitely earn even more that Rs.100 crore… ’3 Idiots’ is the greatest example of it,” he added.

New Delhi, Dec 12 (IANS) Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan says he feels blessed with the love he received from thousands of his fans during the recently concluded 12th Marrakech International Film Festival in Morocco.
“I went to Marrakech film festival because of the people there and their constant love I have got in all these years. I went there to tell them that I love them too and I am blessed to receive their love,” Shah Rukh said in a statement.
He was even conferred Morocco’s prestigious Medal of Honour at the extravaganza, which paid a tribute to Hindi Cinema’s 100 years.
When Shah Rukh went to the Jemaa el-Fna Square in Marrakech, an unprecedented crowd is said to have gathered there.
“The sight of that crowd at Jemaa el-Fna was very overwhelming. They waited to cheer me on, how could I not spend a little time with them. That’s the least I could have done,” added King Khan, who even did a little jig for his fans.
He was so overwhelmed by the sight that he left his security at the red carpet just to jump up on the podium and wave at all the people present there.
“The security guys just didn’t realise when he left them and stood on the podium to send flying kisses to all of them. Shah Rukh gets humbled by the love people shower him with,” said a source close to the actor.
While the crowd sang “Chammak challo”, Shah Rukh didn’t mind performing a step or two from the hit number – a moment perhaps his fans will remember for years to come.

Mumbai, Dec 12 (IANS) While there have been a lot of positives in the Indian film industry in the last 100 years, the spirit to just make a film is lost in the race to make money, feels actor Arshad Warsi.
“We have not left the things that our industry is known for – songs, music and a total entertainment film – and that’s a good thing. Other good thing is that technologically we have advanced in these 100 years. Today there is Shah Rukh’s ‘Ra One’, so technologically we have advanced, so it is good,” the 44-year-old said here Tuesday at the launch of author Sanjay Chopra’s book “Talespin”.
“But the bad thing about it is that somewhere we have lost the spirit to make a film. Today it has become a business which is bad. So there has been good and bad in these 100 years,” he added.
Arshad, who was last seen in “Double Dhamaal” in 2011, currently has a lot of films in hand.
“From January next year, I will be doing ‘Jo Bhi Karva Lo’ which is a sweet, romantic comedy, after that I will do ‘Dedh Ishqiya’ then Raju’s (Rajkumar Hirani) ‘Peekay’ and then there is ‘Chambal Safari’,” Arshad said.
“There are many more films, also listening to some more scripts. So the next year is very much busy for me,” he added.
Besides these, Arshad is also doing “Bhaiyyaji Superhit”, “Total Dhamaal”, “Jolly L.L.B.” and “Golmaal 4″.

New Delhi, Dec 12 (IANS) A special anthem, “Yeh Dilli hai”, capturing the essence of the capital was launched here Wednesday for the first edition of the Delhi International Film Festival (DIFF) 2012, to be held here starting Dec 21.
The song, penned by Rani Malik, and sung and composed by Ravinder Singh, was launched in the presence of veteran actress Sharmila Tagore, who will receive during the fest the lifetime achievement award for her contribution to cinema.
“Yeh Dilli hai” is a peppy number, and its video features key areas of the capital, including Qutub Minar, Jantar Mantar and Lutyen’s Delhi. It also features new facets of the city – the metro and the Buddh International Circuit.
“We have never had a song for Delhi per se. Through this anthem, we have tried to give a song to our city. It is a very rhythmic number and will make people tap their feet at once,” Ram Kishore Parcha, senior film journalist and president of DIFF, said here.
Sharmila was impressed with the song too.
“I like the way Mr. Parcha was so enthusiastic about the song and when he said, ‘It will make everyone tap their feet’, I thought it was quite an exaggeration. But I liked the song. It shows the passion behind it,” she said.
The video of the song, Sharmila said, was “modestly created”. Nevertheless, it was worthy of appreciation, she added.
DIFF 2012, which will conclude Dec 27, will showcase a mix of 174 films from 32 countries. Centenarian Zoya Sehgal will be conferred the Minar-e-Dilli award at the extravaganza, which is scheduled to host a melange of filmmakers from across the world.
